Library Advisory Board Meetings

Boyce Ditto Library Advisory Board Minutes of the March 14, 2017 meeting 2300 SE Martin Luther King, Jr. St. Mineral Wells, Texas 76067 Attending: Troy Stone, Nelda Glover, King Hayes, Gerald Warfield, Coralee Beasley, Lori Schmidtke, Mary Alyce Buckner, Janice Ellis, Lance Howerton, Palin Bree. Meeting called to order by Troy Stone, 6:45pm. Lori Schmidtke moved to accept the minutes. Seconded by Coralee Beasley. Motion passed. Lance Howerton reported that the city had appointed a committee to revisit the city bond issue. He also reported that the Boyce Ditto Trust was considering dissolution. The capital would be given to the city and designated for library use only. The amount is between two hundred and two hundred and twenty-five thousand dollars. The trust has expressed a wish that the funds be used for capital improvements. Troy Stone did not give a chairman’s report. For the Archival and Digitization Committee, Janice Ellis reported that she had applied on behalf of the committee for a Tex-Treasure grant of $1,717.00 for the digitization of city ledgers from 1895 to 1915, a Baker Hotel register, and two scrap books. The funds would also apply to the travel expenses for delivery of the items to UNT. She also reported that we were eligible for a number of upcoming grants including the Brazos Foundation and UNT library grants. For the Friends of the Library, Mary Alyce Buckner reported on the book sale to take place March 31 to April 1. They will be in need of help setting up and taking down the sale. She reported that the Friends of the Library are holding a raffle in conjunction with the book sale. The tickets are $1 or six for $5. The prize is a $100 Walmart gift certificate. The Friends are also sponsoring a staff appreciation luncheon in May. Pain Bree gave the library manager’s report including a report on the Summer Reading Program. Item 1.5 included interlibrary loan statistics which showed a 6/4 ratio in fiction to non-fiction. She also mentioned her retirement and that she would like to continue assisting the library after retirement, particularly working with Joe Dover on the metadata for the various photographic collections up on the Portal to Texas History. She also indicated the need for archival storage units. Other current library programs are going well, including the tax seminars. The new requirement for appointments for this service has improved efficiency. Palin also announced that Lori Schmidtke will be volunteering at the library as part of her degree program. Under Old Business, Troy Sone reported that he had checked on the state of the Summer Reading Program with the staff and the library manager. He found that the program appears to be successful, and that attendance has increased every year. There was a report that one child had been in the library every day the library was open during the program, and on days that it was not she had gone to the Weatherford library. Troy suggested that we wait until the statistics are in from the coming program this summer before considering any suggestions the board might want to make. Palin Bree said individual incentive prizes will be available each incentive day (usually Thursdays) and that all participants will have a chance to win the grand prize. The number of books read will not be a factor in the awarding of prizes. She further elaborated that one of the goals of the program is that both the child and the parent have a positive experience. Lori Schmidtke made a motion that the discussion of the Summer Reading Program be tabled. Gerald Warfield seconded, and the motion passed. Other county events were announced such as the seasonal opening of the Old Jail Museum Complex in Palo Pinto and the Palo Pinto County Tour.
