March Library Board minutes, Tuesday, March 13, 2018
Those attending were Troy Stone, Chairman; King Hayes, Gerald Warfield, Lori Schmidtke, Jeri Calcote,
Coralee Beasley, Mary Alyce Buckner, President of the FOBDL; Lance Howerton, City Manager; and
Louanne Noel, Library Manager.
Chairman Troy Stone called the meeting to order at 6:32 p.m. The board unanimously approved
February’s minutes.
City Manager Lance Howerton reported no further information on the dissolution of the Boyce Ditto
Trust. He said the city council bond committee has met a few times in the last six weeks and the library
renovation project was not selected as one of their primary projects. They will reveal their
recommended plan after the new council is seated in May or June.
Chairman Troy Stone recognized visitors to the meeting. Vincent Hemphill and Carol Rice introduced
themselves, stating they were visiting for information.
Stone, Buckner and Beasley discussed the archival and digitization committee’s progress in securing and
applying for grants. Stone said he has no word yet from UNT as to whether or not they can use the CD
scans he sent of local yearbooks. Buckner said one grant was submitted and another is due in June. They
have a new project called “Birth of a City” that involves digitizing seven volumes of city council minutes
from approximately 1895 – 1925. The volumes include original plats of the city with family names on
them, which should be interesting for genealogists.
The Friends group is planning the Library Staff Appreciation Luncheon on April 23 and a community
reception to welcome Ms. Noel is set for 2-4 pm April 30. Their book sale made as much as usual, but
had the smallest book selection they’ve had in awhile. They plan to do more solicitation to increase their
book donations for future sales.
The Library Manger’s Report is attached. Noel said she is very pleased with Desiree’s training for and
implementation of a library reference desk and its services. Desiree reported on her progress in the last
few weeks and shared some examples of questions she’s received as well as research she has done for
patrons. She received the Staff Recognition Award for the month and said she addressed 50 questions in
the first six days of March. Noel also reported she did get the approximately $1200 grant she plans to
use to purchase Spanish materials for the library. Her annual report is about halfway done, she said.
Schmidtke said she sent out inquiry letters about Imagination Library last month and is waiting on
feedback from those. The FOBDPL will have a meeting at 6:30 March 20 to plan their April events.
Meeting adjourned @ 7:06 pm.
