ROLL CALL
PRESENTATIONS
1. Recognize Library Assistant I Mariann DeMordaunt for Five Years of Service to the
Monterey Public Library and the City of Monterey
Mariann DeMordaunt began her third career at the Monterey Public Library on September 1,
2006 when she joined the Circulation Section of the Readers Services Division as a Library
Assistant I. We say “third” because Mariann first worked at MPL as a Library Assistant in the
Youth Services Division for six years beginning in 1996. In Youth Services, Mariann provided
over 400 storytimes, prepared more than 100 special programs, made some 85 bulletin board
creations, and spent over 5000 hours at the desk helping thousands of customers. Mariann
returned to the Library as an on-call Library Assistant in Youth Services, the California History
Room and in Technical Services from 2003 to 2006. The “third time is the charm” as the old
adage goes, and this was certainly true for us when Mariann became part of the Circulation
team. With her strong people skills, her teamwork, and her enthusiasm for new assignments –
or “growth opportunities” as we like to call them, Mariann has made significant contributions to
Circulation service and the Library as a whole.
Mariann is extremely flexible. With a strong desire to further the goals of the Library, she is
willing to help out where needed. Given her considerable Library experience, Mariann can
frequently be found helping with projects across Library divisions. During her first two months on
the job she was “loaned out” to Technical Services to assist during a staffing shortage, and to
the California Room to help with a grant funded archival cataloging project. By the end of her
first year Mariann had also offered a number of programs to our youngest customers including
Baby, Toddler, Preschool, and Pajama Storytimes, all the while becoming adept at the many
complicated procedures involved in providing excellent Circulation service.
Mariann has an enthusiasm for new projects and learning opportunities. Luckily there seem to
be no end of them at MPL. In 2007 she took on the inventory and restocking of the Library store,
Library Board of Trustees Minutes Wednesday, October 26, 2011
and was instrumental in preparing financial data for Library Store reports. That same year she
learned to drive the Bookmobile, and served as the sole backup driver until 2010 when other
staff members joined the pool. Mariann became the point person for collection maintenance in
2010, monitoring the shelves, updating signage, and communicating shelving priorities with
Pages and Collections Volunteers. In 2011 she received purchasing training from the Finance
Department, and is slated to take on ordering supplies for the Library Help Desk in November.
Mariann is a strong library advocate and enjoys opportunities to share her love of libraries with
the public. Her library knowledge and customer service skills have served us well at numerous
outreach events from surveying members of the baby boom generation at the Monterey Sports
Center, to greeting new students at the Naval Postgraduate School Information Fairs, and
promoting homework help at Back to School events at Del Monte Shopping Center. This month,
when not serving customers at the Library Help Desk you can find her at the Farmers’ Market
on Alvarado Street, encouraging people to “help the Library” by completing our survey for the
strategic planning process, or recording customer responses at one of our Community Dialogs
around town.
Mariann’s communication skills shine in the realm of social networking. In 2010 she joined the
Facebook subcommittee of the Web Team. Thanks to Mariann, customers can now track the
Bookmobile’s whereabouts on Facebook. She joined the blog team in April 2007, and currently
holds the record for the highest number of comments on a single post. Her blog entry on Harry
Potter and the Chamber of Secrets elicited 14 responses! In 2007 Mariann’s supervisor wrote
“her readers advisory skills are excellent. I am always amazed at how much she has read…this
is especially helpful when assisting customers at the Park Lane Bookmobile stop.” Her love of
reading came through in her Fahrenheit 451 blog post. “What book would you save from the
fire?” she asks readers. Mariann then lists her own top ten, which range from the Complete
Works of Shakespeare, Dickens’ Tale of Two Cities and Annie Proulx’s Shipping News to
Harriett the Spy and Piggies by Audrey Wood. You can hear Mariann’s recommendations for
great books to talk about at book groups on the Cover to Cover program she taped this month
with Special Services Coordinator Jeanne McCombs.
Mariann’s work experience at Monterey Public Library is nearly as eclectic as her reading
interests. Thank you Mariann for all that you have contributed to the Library and our community
these past five plus years. We look forward to many new projects and many more years ahead.
