Chair Reneker called the meeting to order at 5:36 p.m.

On a motion by Library Trustee Yamanishi, seconded by Library Trustee Castagna, and
carried by the following vote, the Library Board of Trustees approved the Consent
Agenda:

2. Receive Chair's Comments on Board Responsibilities and Library Priorities
Chair Reneker provided the new and existing members with Library Board organizational
and personnel responsibilities urging Trustees to read materials and speak with
community members in order to work efficiently, especially regarding the Board's fiscal
responsibilities.
3. Discuss July 21 CALTAC Library Board Effectiveness Training
4. Review Council Policy on Selection of Officers and Select Vice-Chair for FY 2012-13
Trustee Yamanishi was selected to serve as Vice-Chair for Fiscal Year 2012-13.
5. Receive Final Review of Monterey Public Library 2012 Strategic Plan
6. Receive Quarterly Report on Trust Fund Activities
7. Review City of Monterey Board, Commission, and Committee (BCC) Handbook
Trustee Castagna excused himself from the meeting at 6:45 p.m.
8. Authorize Chair to Send Letter of Appreciation to the Friends of the Monterey Public
Library for the Monterey Gold Rush Campaign and Submit City Council Agenda Item for
Recognition of Gold Rush Donors and Sponsors
On a motion by Library Trustee Yamanishi, seconded by Library Trustee Wojtkowski, and
carried by the following vote, the Library Board of Trustees authorized the Chair to send
a letter of appreciation to the Friends of the Monterey Public Library for the Monterey
Gold Rush campaign and to submit a City Council Agenda Item for recognition of Gold
Rush donors and sponsors:

Old Business
9. Approve New Vision Statement for Monterey Public Library Strategic Plan 2012-2015
Trustee Yamanishi distributed a copy of Seattle Public Library's Vision and Mission
Statements.
On a motion by Library Trustee Reneker to accept the new Vision Statement, seconded
by Library Trustee Wojtkowski, the Library Board of Trustees failed to approve a new
Vision Statement for Monterey Public Library's Strategic Plan 2012-2015 by the following
vote:

Chair Reneker appointed Trustee Yamanishi and Trustee Koenig to a subcommittee and
asked that they return to the next Library Board meeting with a proposed new Vision
Statement using all of the work that has been done to date.
TRUSTEE COMMENTS
Trustee Yamanishi: Appreciates the new Library Board members for accepting the
challenge of being on the Board, for going through all the material, serving the
community and the Library, and noted that it is one of the most worthwhile
contributions to give our community.
Trustee Wojtkowski: Has learned so much during the past week and is proud of our
Library; it does a fabulous job.
Chair Reneker: Appointed Trustee Koenig as the liaison to the Friends of the Monterey
Public Library. Trustee Koenig accepted.
Shared the conference program for Internet Librarian which will be held in October 2012
in Monterey.

Community Services and Library Director Bui-Burton: Youth Services Manager Karen
Brown sends her apologies that she is unable to attend this evening's Library Board
meeting due to the Summer Reading Program's final party. Trustee Yamanishi asked for
SRP statistics comparing 2011 with 2012.
Starting this Friday our bookmobile and staff will be at La Mesa School as part of back-
to-school and starting next Monday Reference and Readers staff will be at Monterey
High School to sign-up all high school students to have library cards.
When viewing the Library's website take a look at the photographs from the Stuffed
Animal Sleepover on the Kids Page.
Coming to Monterey in March 2014 is the Left Coast Crime writers’ conference--a group
of about 600 mystery and crime authors, librarians, and book reviewers who meet every
year. The theme this year: Calamari Crime. Monterey Public Library will be recognized
as the beneficiary organization.

which are routine and for which a staff recommendation has been prepared. A member of the
public or a Trustee may request that an item recommended for approval on consent be heard on

PUBLIC COMMENTS allows you, the public, to speak for a maximum of three minutes on any

Monterey, CA 93940. The appropriate staff person will contact the sender concerning the details.

public discussion, but that do not require formal noticing as public hearings. You are welcome to

on his or her activities. In addition, a the Board may provide a referral to staff or other resources
for factual information, request staff to report back to the body at a subsequent meeting
concerning any Library matter, or direct staff to place a request to agendize a matter of business

brief report on her activities or a brief announcement. The Director may also ask for clarification or

ADJOURNMENT
“The Board of Monterey Public Library Trustees provides stewardship for Monterey Public Library
assets and services on behalf of all residents, ensures adaptability to a diverse population, changing
environment and advancing technology. Trustees advise the City Council on matters pertaining to the
Library, and advocate on the Library’s behalf, while ensuring an ongoing flow of information between
the Library, the community and the City Council, in accordance with Section 7.1 of the Monterey City
Charter and in support of the mission statement of the Monterey Public Library.”

The Library Board of Trustees meeting packet may be reviewed by the public in the Library. Information
distributed to the Library Board at the Board meeting becomes part of the public record. A copy of
written material, pictures, etc. should be provided for this purpose.
The City of Monterey is committed to include the disabled in all of its services, programs and activities.
