ROLL CALL
PRESENTATIONS
1. Recognize Reference and Readers Services Manager Inga Labeaune for 10 Years of
Service to the Monterey Public Library and the City of Monterey
Inga Labeaune began working for the Library in September 2002 as Librarian II Reference
Supervisor, after ten years as Library Director at St John’s College in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Her professionalism, enthusiasm, and creativity were apparent from her first interview for this
newly created position. As her supervisor noted at the end of her first year “Ms. Labeaune has
exceeded expectations…and made significant contributions to Reference services and the
Library as a whole.”
At the start of her second year Inga added interim Circulation and Readers Services
responsibilities to her Reference Supervisor position. She successfully took on supervision of
two of the Library’s three public service divisions and quickly brought herself up to speed on
circulation, collection maintenance, reading promotion, and Bookmobile procedures, activities,
and issues. Her new supervisor observed, “Her dedication to staff, the Library and a positive
and inclusive vision of public service is simply awe inspiring.”
In December 2004 Inga was promoted to Readers Services Manager while continuing to
supervise the Reference Division. She managed reference, circulation and Bookmobile services
during months of physical, staffing and budgetary changes. In July 2007, Inga’s role as the
manager of two library divisions was recognized by her reclassification into the new position of
Reference and Readers Services Manager.
Inga has been essential to most of the Library’s innovations for the past ten years. She was an
integral part of the “reinvention” effort, working with the management team and staff to enhance
the Library’s welcoming and accessible atmosphere, proactive customer service, and promotion

of popular materials. She managed procurement of the new Bookmobile and Self-Check
systems. She supervised the development of the Teen Services Program, and worked with the
Teen Services librarian to create the current partnership with Monterey High School.
With Youth Services Manager Karen Brown, Inga coordinated planning and implementation of
the shared single service point in 2010—an extraordinarily complex project. Inga now
coordinates the Library Help Desk service. Inga and Karen have been co-coordinators of
Collection Development since 2009, overseeing a period of rapid transformation in collections
such as periodicals, reference, and ebooks, as well as introduction of new formats such as
Travel Bags and Playaways. Most recently, Inga guided the Reference Division’s proposal and
implementation of a much-needed new seating area in the nonfiction collection.
Inga’s dedication to the Library mission and clear thinking about priorities have made her an
invaluable member of the management team. She contributed positively to difficult budget
decisions in 2009 and 2010. The Library’s management reorganization in 2010 could not have
succeeded without her skill and dedication, and we are very grateful for her support and wise
counsel. She played a particularly important role in the recent Strategic Planning effort. She was
an effective member of the Internal Planning Team and an essential part of the managers’ effort
to complete the draft plan in a few short weeks, spending many hours documenting
management discussions and revising the draft plan.
Inga is a highly regarded leader in the City of Monterey and the library community. She is a
graduate of the city’s second Leadership Academy, and past and current Chair of the MOBAC
Reference Committee. She represented MOBAC in the recent Pacific Library Partnership
database selection process. As Facilities Coordinator, she works with Public Works staff and
contractors to oversee building maintenance and improvement projects large and small. She
assists the Friends of the Library as staff coordinator of the semiannual Big Book Sale.
Inga managed the Transforming Life After 50 grant and reported on the successful project at
two statewide professional gatherings. She has developed an ongoing series of information
programs presented by the Reference Division, a long-standing Library goal. She has led and
participated in innumerable and diverse activities to promote the Library in the community.
As coordinator of the Library Help Desk, Inga has successfully resolved dozens of difficult staff
and customer issues, approaching each one with grace, compassion, professionalism, and a
commitment to Library service for all. This is one of the most difficult duties for any Library
manager. Inga performs it as well as anyone we have known.
Inga’s updates and reports always emphasize the contributions of her staff rather than her own,
but Monterey Public Library would be a very different less successful community service without
her “simply awe inspiring” efforts over the last decade. We appreciate her service to the Library
and community, and we look forward to telling the Board about more of her accomplishments in
2017 and many years after.
