Chair Reneker called the meeting to order at 5:00 p.m.

Approval of Minutes

On a motion by Library Trustee Wojtkowski, seconded by Library Trustee Koenig, and
carried by the following vote, the Library Board of Trustees approved the Consent
Agenda:
AYES: 5 TRUSTEES: Reneker, Yamanishi, Castagna, Koenig, Wojtkowski
NOES: 0 TRUSTEES: None
ABSENT: 0 TRUSTEES: None
ABSTAIN: 0 TRUSTEES: None

PUBLIC COMMENTS
Walter Beam, representing the Hearing Loss Association of America, Monterey Bay
Chapter, informed the Library Board about a Portable Hearing Loop system that was
recently donated to their chapter. He offered use of this system at the Monterey Public
Library; additional information was distributed to the Trustees.

2. Receive Briefing on Policy 515: Disruptive Behavior in the Library and Policy 520:
Unattended Children in the Library
3. Receive Quarterly Report on Library Trust Fund Activities
4. Receive Report on Strategic Plan 2012-2015

5. Approve Bookmobile Schedule for January-June 2013
On a motion by Library Trustee Yamanishi, seconded by Library Trustee Castagna, and
carried by the following vote, the Library Board of Trustees approved the Bookmobile
Schedule for January-June 2013:

6. Receive City Attorney’s Office Guidance on Use of the Oler Family Trust Bequest
TRUSTEE COMMENTS
Trustee Koenig: Reported on the October 10, 2012 Friends of MPL Board meeting; she
attended as a non-voting member.
Trustee Reneker: Reminded Trustees of the necessity to adhere to affirmative action
principles as representatives of the library.
Trustee Yamanishi: Inquired about the plan for filling the Reference and Teen Librarian
position.
Trustee Castagna: Inquired about the Joe Mora fundraiser that was held in Pebble Beach
the prior week.

CONSENT ITEMS allow for a review of those items recommended for approval on consent or
recommended to be continued, tabled or withdrawn, etc. Consent items consist of those items
which are routine and for which a staff recommendation has been prepared. A member of the
public or a Trustee may request that an item recommended for approval on consent be heard on
the regular agenda for further discussion.

PUBLIC COMMENTS allows you, the public, to speak for a maximum of three minutes on any
subject which is not on the agenda. Any person or group desiring to bring an item to the attention
of the Library Board may do so during Public Comments or by addressing a letter of explanation
to: Community Services and Library Director, Monterey Public Library, 625 Pacific Street,
Monterey, CA 93940. The appropriate staff person will contact the sender concerning the details.
PUBLIC APPEARANCE
PUBLIC APPEARANCE items are reports on action or informational issues that might stimulate
public discussion, but that do not require formal noticing as public hearings. You are welcome to
offer your comments after being recognized by the Chair. The Chair may limit the time allocated to
each speaker.

TRUSTEE COMMENTS
Trustees may ask a question for clarification, make a brief announcement or make a brief report
on his or her activities. In addition, a the Board may provide a referral to staff or other resources
for factual information, request staff to report back to the body at a subsequent meeting
concerning any Library matter, or direct staff to place a request to agendize a matter of business
on a future agenda. (G.C. 54954.2)

INFORMATIONAL REPORTS & STAFF COMMENTS is used by the Library Director to make a
brief report on her activities or a brief announcement. The Director may also ask for clarification or
direction regarding scheduling of Board meetings and study sessions.

ADJOURNMENT
“The Board of Monterey Public Library Trustees provides stewardship for Monterey Public Library
assets and services on behalf of all residents, ensures adaptability to a diverse population, changing
environment and advancing technology. Trustees advise the City Council on matters pertaining to the
Library, and advocate on the Library’s behalf, while ensuring an ongoing flow of information between
the Library, the community and the City Council, in accordance with Section 7.1 of the Monterey City
Charter and in support of the mission statement of the Monterey Public Library.”

The Library Board of Trustees meeting packet may be reviewed by the public in the Library. Information
distributed to the Library Board at the Board meeting becomes part of the public record. A copy of
written material, pictures, etc. should be provided for this purpose.
The City of Monterey is committed to include the disabled in all of its services, programs and activities.
