MINUTES LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES Regular Meeting Wednesday, January 23, 2013 5:00 PM LIBRARY COMMUNITY ROOM, 625 PACIFIC STREET MONTEREY, CALIFORNIA Trustees Present: Yamanishi, Castagna, Koenig, Wojtkowski, Reneker Trustees Absent: None Staff Members Community Services and Library Director Bui-Burton, Assistant Present: Library Director Holtzman, Reader Services and Reference Manager Labeaune CALL TO ORDER Chair Reneker called the meeting to order at 5:01 p.m. ROLL CALL CONSENT ITEMS Approval of Minutes 1. December 5, 2012 2. January 16, 2013 ***End of Consent Agenda*** On a motion by Library Trustee Yamanishi, seconded by Library Trustee Wojtkowski, and carried by the following vote, the Library Board of Trustees approved the Consent Agenda: AYES: 5 TRUSTEES: Reneker, Yamanishi, Castagna, Koenig, Wojtkowski NOES: 0 TRUSTEES: None ABSENT: 0 TRUSTEES: None ABSTAIN: 0 TRUSTEES: None RECUSED: 0 TRUSTEES: None PUBLIC COMMENTS Chair Reneker opened the floor for public comments: Walt Beam invited Trustees and staff to attend the Hearing Loss Association's Get in the Hearing Loop conference on February 11 from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Community Room. Receive Briefing on Policy 120: Library Card Regulations and Fee Schedule 6. Receive Briefing on Policy 525: Confidentiality of Library Customer Use Records 7. Receive Report on California History Room and Archives 8. Discuss and Direct Staff on Fiscal Year 2013-2014 Budget Priorities TRUSTEE COMMENTS Trustee Reneker: Shared a message from American Library Association President Maureen Sullivan regarding the progress of work with publishers to improve access to ebooks. Shared information on the latest PEW report regarding Library Services in the Digital Age; Community Services & Library Director Bui-Burton distributed a summary of the findings of this report; Inquired with trustees regarding interest in serving on an ad-hoc committee to recommend NIP projects. Trustee Yamanishi: Please sell as many Wine & Chocolate tickets as you’re able. We need the support. Trustee Koenig: Inquired about the Library’s presence at Golden State Theater. Trustee Wojtkowski: Inquired about the Community Services & Library Director’s monthly report. INFORMATIONAL REPORTS & STAFF COMMENTS Community Services and Library Director Bui-Burton distributed a Forbes article titled Why Public Libraries Matter: And How They Can Do More; Informed Trustees of California Public Library Advocates 2013 workshop. 9. A member of the public or a Trustee may request that an item recommended for approval on consent be heard on the regular agenda for further discussion. Approval of Minutes 1. December 5, 2012 2. January 16, 2013 ***End of Consent Agenda*** PUBLIC COMMENTS PUBLIC COMMENTS allows you, the public, to speak for a maximum of three minutes on any subject which is not on the agenda. Any person or group desiring to bring an item to the attention of the Library Board may do so during Public Comments or by addressing a letter of explanation to: Community Services and Library Director, Monterey Public Library, 625 Pacific Street, Monterey, CA 93940. The appropriate staff person will contact the sender concerning the details. PUBLIC APPEARANCE PUBLIC APPEARANCE items are reports on action or informational issues that might stimulate public discussion, but that do not require formal noticing as public hearings. You are welcome to offer your comments after being recognized by the Chair. The Chair may limit the time allocated to each speaker. New Business 3. Receive Report on Library Trust Fund Activities 4. Discuss and Direct Staff on Fiscal Year 2013-2014 Budget Priorities TRUSTEE COMMENTS Trustees may ask a question for clarification, make a brief announcement or make a brief report on his or her activities. In addition, a the Board may provide a referral to staff or other resources for factual information, request staff to report back to the body at a subsequent meeting concerning any Library matter, or direct staff to place a request to agendize a matter of business on a future agenda. Receive Volunteer Report ADJOURNMENT “The Board of Monterey Public Library Trustees provides stewardship for Monterey Public Library assets and services on behalf of all residents, ensures adaptability to a diverse population, changing environment and advancing technology. Trustees advise the City Council on matters pertaining to the Library, and advocate on the Library’s behalf, while ensuring an ongoing flow of information between the Library, the community and the City Council, in accordance with Section 7.1 of the Monterey City Charter and in support of the mission statement of the Monterey Public Library.” -adopted by Library Board of Trustees, April 25, 2007 The Library Board of Trustees meeting packet may be reviewed by the public in the Library. Information distributed to the Library Board at the Board meeting becomes part of the public record. A copy of written material, pictures, etc. should be provided for this purpose. The City of Monterey is committed to include the disabled in all of its services, programs and activities.
