Chair Reneker called the meeting to order at 5:00 p.m.

On a motion by Library Trustee Wojtkowski, seconded by Library Trustee Koenig, and
carried by the following vote, the Library Board of Trustees approved the Consent
Agenda:

5. Review Policy and Procedure for the Annual Evaluation of the Library Director and
Approve Evaluation Form
Trustees requested that a survey of staff be conducted as part of the evaluation process.
Staff will recommend a draft survey at the July meeting for the Board’s review and
approval. The survey will be conducted shortly after this meeting, and compiled results
will be provided to Trustees before the August meeting.
6. Review Council Policy on Selection of Officers and Select Chair and Vice-Chair for 2013-
14
Trustee Yamanishi agreed to serve as Library Board Chair for 2013-14. Trustee
Castagna accepted the office of Vice-Chair.
TRUSTEE COMMENTS
Trustee Yamanishi: Thanked Chair Reneker for Library Board leadership; Requested more
information about the Library’s relationship with the high school and what is projected to happen
in August.
Trustee Reneker: Reminded the Library Board to take seriously the comments from the City
Manager regarding future budget constraints; Inquired about writing a thank you letter to City
Council thanking them for restoration of Sunday Hours.
Trustee Koenig: Friends are having book sale on July 4th in front of Colton Hall; Enjoyed
participating in SRP kick-off; Informed Trustees about the recent Pew Internet & American Life
Project survey (http://libraries.pewinternet.org/2013/06/25/younger-americans-library-services/)
that indicated that younger Americans remain users of print books as well as Internet resources
and ebooks.
Trustee Wojtkowski: Thanked the anonymous donor that contributed $6,000 for Sunday Hours.

CONSENT ITEMS allow for a review of those items recommended for approval on consent or
recommended to be continued, tabled or withdrawn, etc. Consent items consist of those items
which are routine and for which a staff recommendation has been prepared. A member of the
public or a Trustee may request that an item recommended for approval on consent be heard on
the regular agenda for further discussion.

PUBLIC COMMENTS allows you, the public, to speak for a maximum of three minutes on any
subject which is not on the agenda. Any person or group desiring to bring an item to the attention
of the Library Board may do so during Public Comments or by addressing a letter of explanation
to: Community Services and Library Director, Monterey Public Library, 625 Pacific Street,
Monterey, CA 93940. The appropriate staff person will contact the sender concerning the details.
PUBLIC APPEARANCE
PUBLIC APPEARANCE items are reports on action or informational issues that might stimulate
public discussion, but that do not require formal noticing as public hearings. You are welcome to
offer your comments after being recognized by the Chair. The Chair may limit the time allocated to
each speaker.

TRUSTEE COMMENTS
Trustees may ask a question for clarification, make a brief announcement or make a brief report
on his or her activities. In addition, a the Board may provide a referral to staff or other resources
for factual information, request staff to report back to the body at a subsequent meeting
concerning any Library matter, or direct staff to place a request to agendize a matter of business
on a future agenda. (G.C. 54954.2)

INFORMATIONAL REPORTS & STAFF COMMENTS is used by the Library Director to make a
brief report on her activities or a brief announcement. The Director may also ask for clarification or
direction regarding scheduling of Board meetings and study sessions.

ADJOURNMENT
“The Board of Monterey Public Library Trustees provides stewardship for Monterey Public Library
assets and services on behalf of all residents, ensures adaptability to a diverse population, changing
environment and advancing technology. Trustees advise the City Council on matters pertaining to the
Library, and advocate on the Library’s behalf, while ensuring an ongoing flow of information between
the Library, the community and the City Council, in accordance with Section 7.1 of the Monterey City
Charter and in support of the mission statement of the Monterey Public Library.”

The Library Board of Trustees meeting packet may be reviewed by the public in the Library. Information
distributed to the Library Board at the Board meeting becomes part of the public record. A copy of
written material, pictures, etc. should be provided for this purpose.
The City of Monterey is committed to include the disabled in all of its services, programs and activities.
