MINUTES LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES Regular Meeting Wednesday, August 28, 2013 5:00 PM LIBRARY COMMUNITY ROOM, 625 PACIFIC STREET MONTEREY, CALIFORNIA Trustees Present: Yamanishi, Castagna, Koenig, Wojtkowski, Reneker Trustees Absent: None Staff Members Community Services & Library Director Bui-Burton, Assistant Present: Library Director Holtzman, Reference & Reader Services Manager Labeaune, Administrative Assistant Garibaldi CALL TO ORDER Chair Yamanishi called the meeting to order at 5:00 p.m. ROLL CALL CONSENT ITEMS Approval of Minutes 1. July 24, 2013 ***End of Consent Agenda*** On a motion by Library Trustee Castagna, seconded by Library Trustee Reneker, and carried by the following vote, the Library Board of Trustees approved the Consent Agenda: AYES: 5 TRUSTEES: Yamanishi, Castagna, Koenig, Wojtkowski, Reneker NOES: 0 TRUSTEES: None ABSENT: 0 TRUSTEES: None ABSTAIN: 0 TRUSTEES: None RECUSED: 0 TRUSTEES: None PUBLIC COMMENTS Chair Yamanishi opened the floor for public comments: No public comments. PUBLIC APPEARANCE New Business 2. Review Updates to Library Web Site Library Board of Trustees Minutes Wednesday, August 28, 2013 3. Adopt Revisions to Library Board Policy 207: Admission Fees for Certain Library Cultural Programs On a motion by Library Trustee Wojtkowski, seconded by Library Trustee Koenig, and carried by the following vote, the Library Board of Trustees adopted Resolution 13-001 amending Policy 207: Admission Fees for Certain Library Cultural Programs: AYES: 5 TRUSTEES: Yamanishi, Castagna, Koenig, Wojtkowski, Reneker NOES: 0 TRUSTEES: None ABSENT: 0 TRUSTEES: None ABSTAIN: 0 TRUSTEES: None RECUSED: 0 TRUSTEES: None TRUSTEE COMMENTS Trustee Koenig: Chocolate & Wine planning is underway. Will be serving on the Friends nominating committee for October elections. Reported on recent visit to Pennsylvania library that had circulating video games and cake pans and a soon-to-be Lego collection; there were also two tall game tables (with checkers, chess, etc.) for patrons to enjoy. The library also had a flat screen monitor for announcements and had corporate sponsors for various library programs. Trustee Reneker: Shared a recent visit to southern Michigan. Trustee Castagna: Will be touring libraries in Sicily in about 6 weeks. INFORMATIONAL REPORTS & STAFF COMMENTS Community Services and Library Director Bui-Burton: The visit to Dubrovnik and meeting the library staff was interesting and wonderful. Visited a research and public library. Will be giving a report on homelessness at the City Council meeting. The City has been accused of not providing services to the homeless. When the library was closed due to the evacuation there were about 15 people waiting for it to open, many likely homeless. The recruitment closed for the Teen Librarian; applications will be screened and then an oral interview panel will be arranged in the next few weeks. The 1849 donor recognition sign is up in the front library foyer. Assistant Library Director Holtzman: There is a new service that allows patrons to print from their iPhone, iPad or iPod on the wireless network. 4. Receive Library Activity Report 5. Receive Volunteer Report CLOSED SESSION Board adjourned for a break from 5:42 p.m. to 5:55 p.m., reconvened at 5:56 p.m. for closed session and then reconvened in open session at 7:10 p.m. 8. Public Employee Performance Evaluation Pursuant to Government Code Section 54957(b)(2) Title: Library Director ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM CLOSED SESSION The Board prepared the annual performance evaluation of the Library Director. A member of the public or a Trustee may request that an item recommended for approval on consent be heard on the regular agenda for further discussion. Approval of Minutes 1. July 24, 2013 ***End of Consent Agenda*** PUBLIC COMMENTS PUBLIC COMMENTS allows you, the public, to speak for a maximum of three minutes on any subject which is not on the agenda. Any person or group desiring to bring an item to the attention of the Library Board may do so during Public Comments or by addressing a letter of explanation to: Community Services and Library Director, Monterey Public Library, 625 Pacific Street, Monterey, CA 93940. The appropriate staff person will contact the sender concerning the details. PUBLIC APPEARANCE PUBLIC APPEARANCE items are reports on action or informational issues that might stimulate public discussion, but that do not require formal noticing as public hearings. You are welcome to offer your comments after being recognized by the Chair. The Chair may limit the time allocated to each speaker. New Business 2. Review Updates to Library Web Site 3. Adopt Revisions to Library Board Policy 207: Admission Fees for Certain Library Cultural Programs TRUSTEE COMMENTS Trustees may ask a question for clarification, make a brief announcement or make a brief report on his or her activities. In addition, a the Board may provide a referral to staff or other resources for factual information, request staff to report back to the body at a subsequent meeting concerning any Library matter, or direct staff to place a request to agendize a matter of business on a future agenda. Public Employee Performance Evaluation Pursuant to Government Code Section 54957(b)(2) Title: Library Director ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM CLOSED SESSION ADJOURNMENT “The Board of Monterey Public Library Trustees provides stewardship for Monterey Public Library assets and services on behalf of all residents, ensures adaptability to a diverse population, changing environment and advancing technology. Trustees advise the City Council on matters pertaining to the Library, and advocate on the Library’s behalf, while ensuring an ongoing flow of information between the Library, the community and the City Council, in accordance with Section 7.1 of the Monterey City Charter and in support of the mission statement of the Monterey Public Library.” -adopted by Library Board of Trustees, April 25, 2007 The Library Board of Trustees meeting packet may be reviewed by the public in the Library. Information distributed to the Library Board at the Board meeting becomes part of the public record. A copy of written material, pictures, etc. should be provided for this purpose. The City of Monterey is committed to include the disabled in all of its services, programs and activities.
