Recognize Kim Bui-Burton for Ten Years of Service as Library Director to the Monterey Public Library and the City of Monterey Though Kim Bui-Burton’s service to the Library and Community began back in 1975, when she was hired as a Library Page for the Youth Services division, it was in April of 2004 that Kim was selected by the Board to be the new Library Director. For ten years she has led the Library through challenging times, and many exciting achievements. Even while stretched to also manage museums, arts, parking, the Conference Center, recreation, the harbor, and the Sports Center, she has helped the Library to grow in so many ways. First, Kim worked with the Board to realize a long-standing dream - eliminating non-resident fees for Library cards, truly reopening the library for ALL, improving the Library’s relationship with its customers, community, and neighbors. She led the transformation into a popular 21st century Library, with mobile access, ebooks, laptops, school support, technology training, and popular materials prominent upon entering. Her work on the executive management team kept other departments apprised of Library issues and needs and added to our respect throughout the City. Through her work as president of CLA, honored alumnus of SJSU, and MOBAC Administrative Council president and leader, she secured MPL’s reputation throughout the state. Even as hard times worsened, Kim always worked to place the Library in an advantageous position, leading our way to the flexibility of the single service desk and multiple self-checks, She helped us obtain numerous helpful grants, transforming the look of the Library, the ebranch, programs, services and making more community connections. Perhaps most importantly, she provided leadership toward the creation of a professional fund development program to broaden the Library’s financial support and protect Library programs and services. Starting with a gift of Library Board of Trustees Minutes Wednesday, April 23, 2014 $10,000 from the Friends, the Monterey Public Library Endowment Fund is over $132,000 and growing. In the words of City Manager Fred Meurer, Kim is “…an extraordinary leader, a great manager, and an invaluable part of the team that makes Monterey work so well.” We are grateful to Kim for her guidance these past ten years, and we look forward to continuing to work with her as Community Services Director and a best friend of the Library for many years to come.
