MINUTES LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES Regular Meeting Wednesday, June 25, 2014 5:00 PM LIBRARY COMMUNITY ROOM, 625 PACIFIC STREET MONTEREY, CALIFORNIA Trustees Present: Yamanishi, Castagna, Koenig, Wojtkowski Trustees Absent: Reneker Staff Members Interim Library Director Waite, Museums, Cultural Arts and Archives Present: Manager Copeland, Youth Services Manager Brown, Librarian Henry, Circulation Section Supervisor Schwirzke, Administrative Assistant Garibaldi, Human Resources Assistant Punkar CALL TO ORDER Chair Yamanishi called the meeting to order at 5:00 p.m. ROLL CALL Trustee Reneker absent. PRESENTATIONS 1. Introduction of new Youth Services Librarian Kristine Russell I’m delighted to introduce Kristine Russell, who joined the Library staff on June 2, 2014 as our new Youth Services Librarian. Kristine Russell holds a Masters Degree in Library and Information Science from San Jose State, and a B.S. in Interdisciplinary Studies with an emphasis in Science and ESL Education from Texas A&M. She holds several teaching credentials from the State of Texas as well. Kristine has been a Children's Librarian with Orange County Public Libraries at the Westminster and Ladera Ranch branches for nine years. She taught 4th and 5th grades in Irving Texas (with an emphasis on science) and was the Literacy Program Coordinator & Supervisor for the Colton Public Library in California as well. Kristine brings considerable professional experience in children’s programming, elementary education, grant writing, and outreach to Monterey Public Library, and tons of enthusiasm. Please join me in welcoming Kristine Russell. CONSENT ITEMS Approval of Minutes 2. May 28, 2014 Library Board of Trustees Minutes Wednesday, June 25, 2014 ***End of Consent Agenda*** On a motion by Library Trustee Castagna, seconded by Library Trustee Wojtkowski, and carried by the following vote, the Library Board of Trustees approved the Consent Agenda: AYES: 4 TRUSTEES: Yamanishi, Castagna, Koenig, Wojtkowski NOES: 0 TRUSTEES: None ABSENT: 1 TRUSTEES: Reneker ABSTAIN: 0 TRUSTEES: None RECUSED: 0 TRUSTEES: None PUBLIC COMMENTS Chair Yamanishi opened the floor for public comments: No public comments. PUBLIC APPEARANCE New Business 3. Approve Appointment of Library Director Bill Michael has served as the County Librarian for Mono County Library in Mammoth Lakes, California since 2005, where he directed the daily operations of eight library facilities. Prior to working for Mono County, Bill Michael was employed with Inyo County where he served as the Director of the Eastern California Museum in 1985, and was later promoted to the Director of the Library and Museum Services. Michael is a staunch advocate for preserving California’s history, having worked successfully for over 20 years to preserve and establish the Manzanar National Historic Site for over 20 years to preserve the stories of the internment of nearly 120,000 Japanese Americans during World War II. With his library and museum background he is well positioned to assume the leadership role at California’s first public library, where our mission is to “to inspire, educate and delight, preserve Monterey’s memory and link the community with the knowledge and cultures of the world.” Bill Michael completed the Executive MLIS program at San Jose State, and holds a Masters of Liberal Studies with Museum Emphasis degree from the University of Oklahoma as well. He has over 28 years of experience working in California County and local government as a director of rural libraries and museums. In his own words, he is "strongly committed to the important role libraries play in strengthening our communities, and to the role museums have in preserving and teaching our history." Bill Michael has a strong reputation as a collaborative leader, and he is passionate about libraries and museums. Upon approval of this appointment Bill Michael’s first day as Director at the Monterey Public Library will be Monday, July 7, 2014. Receive Update on FY 2014-2015 Budget Process 5. Review Council Policy on Selection of Officers and Select Chair and Vice-Chair for 2014- 15 Trustee Castagna agreed to serve as Library Board Chair for 2014-15. Trustee Koenig accepted the office of Vice Chair. 6. Receive Update on New Director Orientation Planning 7. Receive Report on Koha Migration TRUSTEE COMMENTS Trustee Wojtkowski: Judy Karas is exploring the possibility of the Friends of the Monterey Public Library leasing Casa Gutierrez located on Calle Principal. Enjoyed reading the Seed Library article in the Monterey County Weekly. Trustee Koenig: Summer Reading Program Kick-off was a great event and well attended. Volunteered with Alice at the event and was impressed with the variety of activities. Trustee Yamanishi: Thanked the Library Board for their dedicated work during the last year. The amount of work accomplished is noteworthy: hiring a new library director, progressing with the Strategic Plan, going forward with the budget and Sunday hours, and more; it’s been an awesome year. Trustee Castagna: Applauded Chair Yamanishi’s good leadership and help in navigating the Board through the stormy waters during the past year. She has done an outstanding job. INFORMATIONAL REPORTS & STAFF COMMENTS Interim Library Director Waite: The Library Trustee appointments originally scheduled for July 1 will likely be postponed until August 5. 8. Receive Financial Report The May 2014 financial report was distributed to Library Trustees. 9. Receive Statistical Report 10. Receive Volunteer Report ADJOURNMENT “The Board of Monterey Public Library Trustees provides stewardship for Monterey Public Library assets and services on behalf of all residents, ensures adaptability to a diverse population, changing environment and advancing technology. Trustees advise the City Council on matters pertaining to the Library, and advocate on the Library’s behalf, while ensuring an ongoing flow of information between the Library, the community and the City Council, in accordance with Section 7.1 of the Monterey City Charter and in support of the mission statement of the Monterey Public Library.” -adopted by Library Board of Trustees, April 25, 2007 The Library Board of Trustees meeting packet may be reviewed by the public in the Library. Information distributed to the Library Board at the Board meeting becomes part of the public record. A copy of written material, pictures, etc. should be provided for this purpose. The City of Monterey is committed to include the disabled in all of its services, programs and activities.
