3. Approve Appointment of Library Director
Bill Michael has served as the County Librarian for Mono County Library in Mammoth Lakes,
California since 2005, where he directed the daily operations of eight library facilities. Prior to
working for Mono County, Bill Michael was employed with Inyo County where he served as the
Director of the Eastern California Museum in 1985, and was later promoted to the Director of the
Library and Museum Services. Michael is a staunch advocate for preserving California’s history,
having worked successfully for over 20 years to preserve and establish the Manzanar National
Historic Site for over 20 years to preserve the stories of the internment of nearly 120,000
Japanese Americans during World War II. With his library and museum background he is well
positioned to assume the leadership role at California’s first public library, where our mission is
to “to inspire, educate and delight, preserve Monterey’s memory and link the community with the
knowledge and cultures of the world.”
Bill Michael completed the Executive MLIS program at San Jose State, and holds a Masters of
Liberal Studies with Museum Emphasis degree from the University of Oklahoma as well. He has
over 28 years of experience working in California County and local government as a director of
rural libraries and museums. In his own words, he is "strongly committed to the important role
libraries play in strengthening our communities, and to the role museums have in preserving
and teaching our history." Bill Michael has a strong reputation as a collaborative leader, and he
is passionate about libraries and museums. Upon approval of this appointment Bill Michael’s
first day as Director at the Monterey Public Library will be Monday, July 7, 2014.
On a motion by Library Trustee Koenig, seconded by Library Trustee Wojtkowski, and
carried by the following vote, the Library Board of Trustees approved the appointment of
