MINUTES LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES Regular Meeting Wednesday, January 28, 2015 5:00 PM LIBRARY COMMUNITY ROOM, 625 PACIFIC STREET MONTEREY, CALIFORNIA Trustees Present: Yamanishi, Castagna, Koenig, Wojtkowski, Ramaswamy Trustees Absent: None Staff Members Library Director Bill Michael, Reference and Readers Services Present: Manager Waite, Museums, Cultural Arts and Archives Manager Copeland, Special Services Coordinator McCombs, Library Assistant II White, Administrative Assistant Garibaldi, Librarian Harris, On-call Library Assistant Hardy CALL TO ORDER Chair Castagna called the meeting to order at 5:00 p.m. ROLL CALL PRESENTATIONS 1. Receive Report on Teen Services Action: Received and discussed report from Teen Librarian Eboni Harris CONSENT ITEMS Approval of Minutes 2. December 3, 2014 Action: Approved 3. January 13, 2015 Action: Approved ***End of Consent Agenda*** On a motion by Library Trustee Yamanishi, seconded by Library Trustee Varna Ramaswamy, and carried by the following vote, the Library Board of Trustees approved the Consent Agenda: AYES: 5 TRUSTEES: Ramaswamy, Yamanishi, Castagna, Koenig, Wojtkowski NOES: 0 TRUSTEES: None ABSENT: 0 TRUSTEES: None ABSTAIN: 0 TRUSTEES: None RECUSED: 0 TRUSTEES: None Library Board of Trustees Minutes Wednesday, January 28, 2015 PUBLIC COMMENTS Chair Castagna opened the floor for public comments: No public comments. PUBLIC APPEARANCE New Business 4. Discussion of January 13, 2015 Board Retreat Action: Discussed 5. Receive Report on Strategic Plan 2012-2015 Action: Received report and discussed 6. Receive Report on 2015/2016 Neighborhood Improvement Program (NIP) Requests and Provide Direction to Staff Action: Received report and discussed. Trustees agreed the priorities are items 1, 3, and 2 and directed Library Director Michael to further review with the appropriate NIP contact. 7. Report on Progress of Proposed Library Reorganization Action: Received report and discussed 8. Discuss and Direct Staff on Fiscal Year 2015-2017 Budget Priorities Action: Received report and discussed INFORMATIONAL REPORTS & STAFF COMMENTS Library Director Michael: Announced that there are four new 1849 Society members. 9. Receive Library Activity Report Action: Received report and discussed Trustee Koenig left the meeting at 6:33 p.m. and returned at 6:35 p.m. Trustee Wojtkowski left the meeting at 6:39 p.m. and returned at 6:41 p.m. 10. Receive Volunteer Report Action: Received report and discussed TRUSTEE COMMENTS Trustee Yaminishi: Happy to see the manner in which the strategic plan is moving forward. Trustee Ramaswamy: Commented on the wealth of information provided and how much is taking place at the Library. Library Board Meeting Minutes Wednesday, January 28, 2015 2 Library Board of Trustees Minutes Wednesday, January 28, 2015 Trustee Wojtkowski: During a recent visit to Maui she was surprised to see four Friends of the library bookstores. Trustee Koenig: On behalf of the Friends of the Monterey Public Library, Library Board members are reminded that donations are appreciated and welcomed for Chocolate & Wine as well as any volunteer assistance at the event. Previous trustee Maxine Reneker will again donate port. Trustee Castagna: Shared the innovative programming that San Francisco Public Library is currently providing for their homeless patrons, which account for approximately 15% of their 5,000 daily visitors, by employing a psychiatric social worker. Receive Report on Teen Services CONSENT ITEMS CONSENT ITEMS allow for a review of those items recommended for approval on consent or recommended to be continued, tabled or withdrawn, etc. Consent items consist of those items which are routine and for which a staff recommendation has been prepared. A member of the public or a Trustee may request that an item recommended for approval on consent be heard on the regular agenda for further discussion. Approval of Minutes 2. December 3, 2014 3. January 13, 2015 ***End of Consent Agenda*** PUBLIC COMMENTS PUBLIC COMMENTS allows you, the public, to speak for a maximum of three minutes on any subject which is not on the agenda. Any person or group desiring to bring an item to the attention of the Library Board may do so during Public Comments or by addressing a letter of explanation to: Community Services and Library Director, Monterey Public Library, 625 Pacific Street, Monterey, CA 93940. The appropriate staff person will contact the sender concerning the details. PUBLIC APPEARANCE PUBLIC APPEARANCE items are reports on action or informational issues that might stimulate public discussion, but that do not require formal noticing as public hearings. Receive Statistical Report 12. Receive Volunteer Report TRUSTEE COMMENTS Trustees may ask a question for clarification, make a brief announcement or make a brief report on his or her activities. In addition, a the Board may provide a referral to staff or other resources for factual information, request staff to report back to the body at a subsequent meeting concerning any Library matter, or direct staff to place a request to agendize a matter of business on a future agenda. (G.C. 54954.2) ADJOURNMENT “The Board of Monterey Public Library Trustees provides stewardship for Monterey Public Library assets and services on behalf of all residents, ensures adaptability to a diverse population, changing environment and advancing technology. Trustees advise the City Council on matters pertaining to the Library, and advocate on the Library’s behalf, while ensuring an ongoing flow of information between the Library, the community and the City Council, in accordance with Section 7.1 of the Monterey City Charter and in support of the mission statement of the Monterey Public Library.” -adopted by Library Board of Trustees, April 25, 2007 The Library Board of Trustees meeting packet may be reviewed by the public in the Library. Information distributed to the Library Board at the Board meeting becomes part of the public record. A copy of written material, pictures, etc. should be provided for this purpose.
