Chair Koenig called the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m.

On a motion by Library Trustee Wojtkowski, seconded by Library Trustee Yamanishi, and

New Business
3. Receive Report on Neighborhood Improvement Program (NIP) Projects and Capital
Improvement Projects (CIP)
Action: Received report and discussed
Senior Engineer Krebs provided information about the NIP approved kitchen addition and
Capital Project Manager Williamson provided information about the Library’s roof replacement.
4. Receive Update and Provide Direction on Fiscal Year 2015-2017 Budget
Action: Received and discussed
Library Director Michael updated the Library Board on staff recruitments and the progress to the
management job description currently under revision. Continues work on the reorganization
agenda report slated for the October 6 City Council meeting. Two new security gates have been
installed and 12 new databases are now available.
5. Conduct a First Reading of Revisions to Library Board Policy 140: Charges for Printing
Action: Conducted first reading
6. Receive Report on August 20, 2015 Staff Workday
Action: Received and discussed
Trustee Yamanishi directed staff to provide a summary of the strategic plan brainstorm from the
staff workshop.
INFORMATIONAL REPORTS & STAFF COMMENTS
The July 2015 customer suggestions were distributed to the Library Board.

Action: Received and discussed
Library Director Michael: Updated the Library Board on the upcoming Books in Bloom benefit.
He shared that a customer was given a letter suspending Library privileges which ultimately
resulted in the customer’s arrest. Youth Librarian Kristine Russell will be moving in December.
Cultural Arts and Archives Manager Copeland added appreciation for California History Room
volunteer Jerry Azevedo for creating a Tracing the History of Your House guide.

Action: Received and discussed
Reference and Readers’ Services Manager Waite added that bookmobile visits increased
due to the newly added stops.

Action: Received and discussed
TRUSTEE COMMENTS
Trustee Castagna: Commented that the staff workshop was worthwhile.
Trustee Yamanishi: Thrilled about the progress of the kitchen addition and the roof replacement
and expressed her appreciation for the young boy who raised funds to donate to the Library.
Trustee Lambert Hamrick: Excited to be appointed to the Library Board and eager to learn.
Trustee Wojtkowski: Shared that the Old Monterey Foundation is hosting Art in the Gardens to
promote interest and knowledge of the downtown historic gardens and distributed flyers. She
hopes that the Library and Recreation Departments will strengthen their relationship resulting in
increased and combined programming.
Trustee Koenig: Commented that it was wonderful to read the thank you letter written to
Librarian Kim Smith and On-Call Librarian Jeane Ess.
ADJOURNMENT
Having no further business to come before the Library Board, Chair Koenig adjourned the
meeting at 6:50 p.m.

CONSENT ITEMS allow for a review of those items recommended for approval on consent or
recommended to be continued, tabled or withdrawn, etc. Consent items consist of those items
which are routine and for which a staff recommendation has been prepared. A member of the
public or a Trustee may request that an item recommended for approval on consent be heard on
the regular agenda for further discussion.

to: Library Director, Monterey Public Library, 625 Pacific Street, Monterey, CA 93940. The
appropriate staff person will contact the sender concerning the details.

PUBLIC APPEARANCE items are reports on action or informational issues that might stimulate
public discussion, but that do not require formal noticing as public hearings. You are welcome to
offer your comments after being recognized by the Chair. The Chair may limit the time allocated to
each speaker.

INFORMATIONAL REPORTS & STAFF COMMENTS is used by the Library Director to make a
brief report on his activities or a brief announcement. The Director may also ask for clarification or
direction regarding scheduling of Board meetings and study sessions.

TRUSTEE COMMENTS
Trustees may ask a question for clarification, make a brief announcement or make a brief report
on his or her activities. In addition, a the Board may provide a referral to staff or other resources
for factual information, request staff to report back to the body at a subsequent meeting
concerning any Library matter, or direct staff to place a request to agendize a matter of business

ADJOURNMENT
“The Board of Monterey Public Library Trustees provides stewardship for Monterey Public Library
assets and services on behalf of all residents, ensures adaptability to a diverse population, changing
environment and advancing technology. Trustees advise the City Council on matters pertaining to the
Library, and advocate on the Library’s behalf, while ensuring an ongoing flow of information between
the Library, the community and the City Council, in accordance with Section 7.1 of the Monterey City
Charter and in support of the mission statement of the Monterey Public Library.”

The Library Board of Trustees meeting packet may be reviewed by the public in the Library. Information
distributed to the Library Board at the Board meeting becomes part of the public record. A copy of
written material, pictures, etc. should be provided for this purpose.
