MINUTES LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES Regular Meeting Wednesday, February 24, 2016 5:00 PM LIBRARY COMMUNITY ROOM, 625 PACIFIC STREET MONTEREY, CALIFORNIA Trustees Present: Yamanishi, Castagna, Wojtkowski, Lambert Hamrick Trustees Absent: Koenig Staff Members Interim Library Director Waite, Museums, Cultural Arts and Archives Present: Manager Copeland, Administrative Assistant Garibaldi, Technology Services Specialist Kuhn, Youth Services Librarian Armstrong CALL TO ORDER Vice-chair Wojtkowski called the meeting to order at 5:00 p.m. ROLL CALL Library trustee Koenig absent. Vice-chair Wojtkowski moved Agenda Item 9 before Agenda Item 1. PRESENTATIONS 1. Introduction of Youth Services Librarian Dayna Armstrong (Not a Project under CEQA Article 20, Section 15378 and under General Rule Article 5, Section 15061) Action: Introduced Interim Library Director Waite introduced Youth Services Librarian Dayna Armstrong. 2. Receive Report from Library Staff Member on Activities (Not a Project under CEQA Article 20, Section 15378 and under General Rule Article 5, Section 15061) Action: Received Technology Service Specialist David Kuhn provided a report to Library Trustees outlining his responsibilities. CONSENT ITEMS On a motion by Library Trustee Lambert Hamrick, seconded by Library Trustee Castagna, and carried by the following vote, the Library Board of Trustees approved the Consent Agenda: AYES: 4 TRUSTEES: Castagna, Lambert Hamrick, Wojtkowski, Yamanishi NOES: 0 TRUSTEES: None ABSENT: 1 TRUSTEES: Koenig ABSTAIN: 0 TRUSTEES: None RECUSED: 0 TRUSTEES: None Library Board of Trustees Minutes Wednesday, February 24, 2016 Approval of Minutes 3. PUBLIC APPEARANCE New Business 5. Receive Report on Monterey Historic Cell Phone Tours and Signage (Not a Project under CEQA Article 20, Section 15378 and under General Rule Article 5, Section 15061) Action: Received report and discussed Museums, Cultural Arts and Archives Manager Copeland provided a report to the Library Board. 6. Receive Report from the Kitchen Addition Ad Hoc Subcommittee (Not a Project under CEQA Article 20, Section 15378 and under General Rule Article 5, Section 15061) Action: Received report and discussed Trustee Yamanishi shared a component of the 2001 Library Facilities Master Plan that included the addition of Etta’s Café, named after Monterey’s first City Librarian, which was envisioned to be a café managed by the Friends group to raise funds for the Library. Receive Report on Neighborhood Improvement Program (NIP) Projects and Capital Improvement Program (CIP) Projects (Not a Project under CEQA Article 20, Section 15378 and under General Rule Article 5, Section 15061) Action: Received report and discussed Jeff Krebs provided a report to the Library Board. 10. Receive Update and Provide Direction on Fiscal Year 2016-2017 Budget (Not a Project under CEQA Article 20, Section 15378 and under General Rule Article 5, Section 15061) Library Board Meeting Minutes Wednesday, February 24, 2016 2 Library Board of Trustees Minutes Wednesday, February 24, 2016 Action: Received report and discussed INFORMATIONAL REPORTS & STAFF COMMENTS Interim Library Director Waite shared that customers may now use the automated phone renewal system to renew materials and that the Shelf-to-Shore program has been reintroduced into Library services. She added that the Monterey Public Library was selected to host this year’s Koha Conference in August 2016. 11. Receive Library Activity Report (Not a Project under CEQA Article 20, Section 15378 and under General Rule Article 5, Section 15061) Action: Received report and discussed Trustee Wojtkowski inquired about an item noted under Planning and Projects regarding Dennis receiving, in loan or gift, historical materials from the Museum of Monterey. 12. Receive Volunteer Report (Not a Project under CEQA Article 20, Section 15378 and under General Rule Article 5, Section 15061) Action: Received report and discussed TRUSTEE COMMENTS Trustee Yamanishi: Commented that she would like the Library to explore the County literacy program and avenues for integrating ESL services into Monterey Public Library programs. Trustee Lambert Hamrick: Thanked everyone for their dedication in organizing and hosting the Chocolate & Wine Benefit. Trustee Castagna: Shared and distributed the latest estimated revenue information from the Friends Chocolate & Wine event. Trustee Wojtkowski: Inquired about utilizing the newly installed screen for promoting upcoming Library events. (G.C. 54954.2) ADJOURNMENT “The Board of Monterey Public Library Trustees provides stewardship for Monterey Public Library assets and services on behalf of all residents, ensures adaptability to a diverse population, changing environment and advancing technology. Trustees advise the City Council on matters pertaining to the Library, and advocate on the Library’s behalf, while ensuring an ongoing flow of information between the Library, the community and the City Council, in accordance with Section 7.1 of the Monterey City Charter and in support of the mission statement of the Monterey Public Library.” -adopted by Library Board of Trustees, April 25, 2007 Library Board of Trustees Wednesday, February 24, 2016 2 The Library Board of Trustees meeting packet may be reviewed by the public in the Library.
