Chair Wojtkowski called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m.

Trustee Lambert Hamrick was absent.
PRESENTATIONS
1. State of the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District Schools – Presentation by Dr. PK
Diffenbaugh, Superintendent (Not a Project under CEQA Article 20, Section 15378 and
under General Rule Article 5, Section 15061)
Action: Presented and discussed
Superintendent Diffenbaugh provided an overview of action taking place within the District and
their vision to be one of the finest school systems in the country.

On a motion by Library Trustee Yamanishi, seconded by Library Trustee Koenig, and
carried by the following vote, the Library Board of Trustees approved the Consent
Agenda:

3. Review Council Policy on Selection of Officers and Select Chair and Vice-Chair for 2017-
18 (Not a Project under CEQA Article 20, Section 15378 and under General Rule Article
5, Section 15061)
Action: Reviewed and selected
Library Trustee Petty will transition to Chair and Library Trustee Yamanishi will transition to the
Vice Chair. The Friends Liaison will be determined when Trustee Lambert Hamrick returns.

4. Receive Report on Library Signage (Not a Project under CEQA Article 20, Section 15378
and under General Rule Article 5, Section 15061)
Action: Received and discussed
Library Director Waite shared that a staff team will meet to revamp the internal signage. Waite
shared that Trucksis banners are expected to be hung during summer.
5. Receive Report on Neighborhood Improvement Program (NIP) Projects and Capital
Improvement Program (CIP) Projects (Not a Project under CEQA Article 20, Section
15378 and under General Rule Article 5, Section 15061)
Action: Received and discussed
Library Director Waite shared that the NIP committee selected investing $147,000 to remodel
the Learning Lab. The project is expected to go to Council on June 20. No CIP update.
6. Receive Update on FY 2017-19 Budget Process and Provide Staff Direction (Not Project
under CEQA Article 20, Section 15378 and under General Rule Article 5, Section 15061)
Action: Received and discussed
Library Director Waite shared that the City projects a surplus of $300,000 this year with a deficit
of $1.2 million the following year. Library salary savings are conservatively estimated at
$70,000. Library Director Waite shared that the Finance Director had lifted the ban on spending
budget savings. Waite distributed a copy of the salary savings projects that the Board approved
at the March 22, 2017 meeting.
INFORMATIONAL REPORTS & STAFF COMMENTS
Library Director Waite shared the sad news that former library trustee Peggy Chandler passed
away and noted her instrumental work in removing the non-resident library card fee.
Waite also shared that Dorothy Albee, who has been a longtime Stories for Adults attendee, will
be turning 100.

Receive Library Activity Report

Action: Received and discussed
Library Director Waite again reminded the Board that lack of noting staff in the activity report
does not equate to lack of exceptional contributions to Library operations.
Waite highlighted that Fund Development Officer Thongchua did an amazing job organizing the
financial literacy workshops that were standing room attendance. She and Thongchua attended
a Civic Club meeting and from that event the Facing Hard Times writing program was
actualized. Librarians Rader, Armstrong, and Manager Anderson hosted a successful Library
Partners workshop. She acknowledged Technical Assistant Kuhn and Technical Supervisor
Cunha’s work in the recent Koha upgrade. Waite shared that the Summer Reading Program
Kick-off takes place Saturday, June 3 on Colton Lawn.
Trustee Petty asked for information about EBSCO and the promotional commercial featuring
Librarian Eboni Harris and Library Director Inga Waite.

Trustee Petty asked for explanation regarding the increase in August visits.

TRUSTEE COMMENTS
Trustee Petty shared that he is looking forward to the many upcoming excellent projects.
Trustee Koenig commented that she is excitedly looking forward to the Summer Reading
Program.

Having no further business to come before the Library Board, Chair Wojtkowski adjourned the
meeting at 7:23 p.m.

ADJOURNMENT
“The Board of Monterey Public Library Trustees provides stewardship for Monterey Public Library
assets and services on behalf of all residents, ensures adaptability to a diverse population, changing
environment and advancing technology. Trustees advise the City Council on matters pertaining to the
Library, and advocate on the Library’s behalf, while ensuring an ongoing flow of information between
the Library, the community and the City Council, in accordance with Section 7.1 of the Monterey City
Charter and in support of the mission statement of the Monterey Public Library.”
