STUDY SESSION
1. Discussion and Priority Setting for Library Fund Development (Not a Project under CEQA
Article 20, Section 15378 and under General Rule Article 5, Section 15061)
Action: Discussed
Participants discussed the Development & Fundraising Plan for the Monterey Public Library
2019 – 2022 prepared by Library Strategies. Consultant Stu Wilson of Library Strategies was
brought in by Zoom from 9:30 – 10:30 to answer questions.
Chair Petty made a motion to recess the meeting at 10:30 a.m. The Chair reconvened the
meeting at 10:45 a.m.
Discussion between the groups continued regarding fundraising plans for Monterey Public
Library. The Friends President will investigate the pros and cons of establishing a Friends and
Foundation. Many donors are only comfortable contributing to 501c(3) organizations. Also,
many fundraising campaigns require that the recipient be a 501c(3) organization. Thongchua
mentioned National Library Giving Day, the national fundraising day for public libraries on April
10 as an example. A special meeting of the Friends will need to be called to decide whether or
not the Friends will participate in that campaign. Staff will bring a recommendation to the Board
of Trustees at a future meeting regarding adoption of a Fund Development Plan for the
remainder of FY2019.
