BOARD OF LIBRARY TRUSTEES REGULAR MEETING MINUTES CITY OF MONTEREY Thursday, May 25, 2023 4:00 PM COUNCIL CHAMBER, 580 PACIFIC STREET, AND ZOOM TELECONFERENCE MONTEREY, CALIFORNIA Trustees Present: Fellguth, Joshi, Moroh, Petty, Silveria Trustees Absent: None Staff Members Present: Library & Museums Director, Administrative Assistant, Library Manager TELECONFERENCE NOTICE This meeting was held with a combination of in-person and teleconference attendance, pursuant to the Ralph M. Brown Act, Calif. Gov. Code sec. 54953(b). CALL TO ORDER Chair Fellguth called the meeting to order at 4:01 p.m. ROLL CALL PRESENTATIONS 1. Receive Update on Monterey Public Library Friends & Foundation Activities (Not a Project under CEQA per Article 20, Section 15378 and under General Rule Article 5, Section 15061) Action: Received Presentation Monterey Public Library Friends & Foundation President Allie Ladio updated the Library Board on activities. Library Trustees asked questions and made comments. There was no public comment on the matter. CONSENT ITEMS On a motion by Trustee Moroh, seconded by Trustee Silveria, and carried by the following vote, the Board of Library Trustees approved the consent agenda: AYES: 5 TRUSTEES: Fellguth, Joshi, Moroh, Petty, Silveria NOES: 0 TRUSTEES: None ABSENT: 0 TRUSTEES: None ABSTAIN: 0 TRUSTEES: None RECUSED: 0 TRUSTEES: None Approval of Minutes 2. April 27, 2023 (Not a Project under CEQA per Article 20, Section 15378 and under General Rule Article 5, Section 15061) Action: Approved ***End of Consent Agenda*** Board of Library Trustees Meeting Minutes May 25, 2023 PUBLIC COMMENTS Chair Fellguth opened public comments: no public comments. PUBLIC APPEARANCE 3. Receive Update on the Children’s Area Refresh (Not a Project under CEQA per Article 20, Section 15378 and under General Rule Article 5, Section 15061) Action: Received and discussed Library and Museums Director Edwards provided an update on plans to refresh the Children’s area. Library Trustees asked questions and made comments. There was no public comment on the matter. INFORMATIONAL REPORTS & STAFF COMMENTS 4. Receive Update on Library Director Activities (Not a Project under CEQA per Article 20, Section 15378 and under General Rule Article 5, Section 15061) Action: Received and discussed Edwards updated the Library Board on recent activities. There was no public comment on the matter. 5. Receive Financial Report (Not a Project under CEQA per Article 20, Section 15378 and under General Rule Article 5, Section 15061) Action: Received and discussed Edwards provided an overview of the financial report. There was no public comment on the matter. 6. Receive Statistical Report (Not a Project under CEQA per Article 20, Section 15378 and under General Rule Article 5, Section 15061) Action: Received and discussed Edwards reviewed the statistical report. There was no public comment on the matter. TRUSTEE COMMENTS Library Trustee Joshi commented that he recently visited the Library’s website and appreciated the ease in accessing I-Search. Petty commented about a recently published article in the Washington Post and the Herald, “A Far Bigger Problem than Book Bans? Declining Literacy.” He recommended reading the article. He was pleased to see nearly 20 references to Hank Aaron in the Library’s catalog. Fellguth expressed gratitude that the Casanova Oak Knoll Park Bookmobile stop has been scheduled for residents. In addition, the Board may provide a referral to staff or other resources for factual information, request staff to report back to the body at a subsequent meeting concerning any Library matter, or direct staff to place a request to agendize a matter of business on a future agenda. (G.C. 54954.2) ADJOURNMENT “The Board of Monterey Public Library Trustees provides stewardship for Monterey Public Library assets and services on behalf of all residents, ensures adaptability to a diverse population, changing environment and advancing technology. Trustees advise the City Council on matters pertaining to the Library, and advocate on the Library’s behalf, while ensuring an ongoing flow of information between the Library, the community and the City Council, in accordance with Section 7.1 of the Monterey City Charter and in support of the mission statement of the Monterey Public Library.” -adopted by Library Board of Trustees, April 25, 2007 The Library Board of Trustees meeting packet may be reviewed by the public in the Library.
