CALL TO ORDER
Mayor Della Sala called the meeting to order at 7:04 p.m.
PRESENTATIONS
1. "For the Love of Monterey" Workshop by Author and Speaker Peter Kageyama (City Manager -
101-14)
Communications and Outreach Manager McGrath introduced the item. Councilmember
Selfridge introduced Peter Kageyama, author of For the Love of Cities.
Mr. Kageyama gave a presentation about how to generate love of community among residents,
businesses, and visitors. He emphasized criteria that make a city more lovable, such as being
more bike-friendly or walkable. Mr. Kageyama's presentation included several examples of how
cities around the country are making their communities lovable. Some examples included the
"garden hose solution," love notes, surprise and delight, initiating fun, "Mice on Main," Oakland
gnomes, the Big Blue Bear, a whimsical, farmers' market, city rituals and traditions (water fire,
dinner on the bridge, bubble gum alley), and enlisting co-creators (monsters and the Grand
Rapids lip dub). Mr. Kageyama said that the goal is to create a virtuous cycle where more
people 'get in the game' and create surprise and delight.
The Mayor and Councilmembers thanked Mr. Kageyama. Mayor Della Sala opened public
comment on the item. Heberd Olsen suggested that AMP is one of the assets that needs to be
exploited. He gave an example of Pacific Grove Museum's use of emails and AMP to illustrate
the history of Pacific Grove.
Carl Outzen said that the City has attractions such as a fishing boat and the Fisherman's Wharf.
He suggested that maybe the City could be a little more lenient with encroachment permits if
developers have ideas. He told the story of obtaining a clock at Simoneau Plaza.
Sharon Dwight, New Monterey resident, said that the community no longer conducts some
traditional events such as La Posada, the Easter egg hunt, and parades. She suggested taking
pictures of unusual decorations and placing them in the City Focus, or placing directional signs
throughout the city. She said that the bear sculptures are loved by children, and she suggested
City projects, such as a pedestrian bridge, a City dinner, community dance, or symphony
orchestra.

Heberd Olsen said that Monterey has many historic buildings and those are walkable. He
suggested having signage pointing to the historic trail. Having no further requests to speak,
Mayor Della Sala closed public comment.
On request from Councilmember Selfridge, Mr. Kageyama presented the "Stealth Bicycle"
story.
Councilmember Haffa suggested a "Ride the Train with the Mayor" day at Dennis the Menace
park. He said he would like to have some portion of one of Monterey's beaches that is dog-
friendly. He suggested having a place where more music could happen. He said that Monterey
does a pretty good job of accommodating ideas. He said he loved the Big Blue Bear, and
suggested a grant program for the Art Commission.
ADJOURNMENT
With no further business to come before the City Council, Mayor Della Sala adjourned the
meeting at 8:30 p.m.
