May 23, 2011 Item # 1 MINUTES COLTON HALL MUSEUM AND CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION Monday, April 25, 2011 4:00 PM COUNCIL CHAMBER, FEW MEMORIAL HALL OF RECORDS MONTEREY, CALIFORNIA Commissioners Present: Rodriguez, Greenwald, Dias, Han, Messenger, Schneider, Wojtkowski Commissioners Absent: None Ex-Officio and Staff Community Services and Library Director Bui-Burton, Museums, Members Present: Cultural Arts and Archives Manager Copeland, Administrative Assistant Rygg CALL TO ORDER 4:02 PM ROLL CALL CONSENT ITEMS Approval of Minutes 1. March 28, 2011 Motion made by Wojtkowski to approved the minutes, seconded by Schneider. Motion approved. ***End of Consent Agenda*** PUBLIC COMMENTS INFORMATIONAL REPORTS & STAFF COMMENTS 2. Museum and Cultural Arts Division Activity Report March 1-31, 2011 Smaller than usual attendance at the Alvarado Gallery Opening on Friday, April 15. It was noted that shows featuring multiple artists may draw larger numbers and that an out- of-the-area artist may have a smaller local audience. A pre-application has been submitted to the Community Foundation for Monterey County for a Doud Fund grant for an update to the Colton Hall Historic Structure Report (required for any future work to Colton Hall). If the pre-application decision is approved in early May, the CHMCAC will receive a presentation on the grant application before it is submitted to the Doud Fund Grant Committee. Announcement of grant award should be in September-October 2011. PUBLIC APPEARANCE Old Business Colton Hall Museum and Cultural Arts Commission Minutes Monday, April 25, 2011 3. Receive Report on Fiscal Year 2011/2012 Budget Process 4. Review and Prioritize Draft Strategic Plan Goals and Provide Guidance to Staff The Commission agreed to have Karen Csejtay of Leadership Monterey facilitate another strategic planning meeting with Commission members to further define and prioritize objectives from the goals the Commission created in 2010. The Commission directed staff to acquire cost, timeframe and meeting time for the strategic planning subcommittee to meet with Csejtay. The Commission also discussed establishing goals before acquiring funds and vice versa. New Business 5. Receive Report from Ad-Hoc Fundraising Subcommittee The Commission agreed to raise funds for stewardship and art collections rather than raise $40K for cultural arts grants. 6. Receive Report from Ad-Hoc Colton Hall Music Series Subcommittee The Commission discussed the content and timeframe to distribute the music concert fundraising letter. Suggestions were made to: request business sponsorship for the concert series; advertise concerts on city's website instead of direct mail; set specific concert dates, times, and work on increasing amount of donations. Chair Rodriguez assisted staff with updating mailing list information and noted that there are few email addresses for cultural arts event attendees. 7. Report on "Art in the Adobes" The Commission Chair hopes that the Commission will be involved in the "Art in the Adobes" (AIA) event this fall. AIA will provide an opportunity for the Commission to be known in other communities. COMMISSIONER COMMENTS Rodriquez – Noticed that there was a painting in the City’s art collection and inquired if it was Commissioner Han’s painting. Han – Affirmed that the painting was his and it is now stored in the vault. Wojtkowski – The Library’s House and Garden Tour is in two and a half weeks, on May 15. Greenwald – In the next few days, the Monterey Museum of Art may show a video which he filmed of a behind-the-scenes look at the relocation of a 12-foot mural by Gottardo Piazzoni from one part of the MMA to the other. Rodriquez – The NIP meeting is on Thursday, April 28 at 7 pm and the Sloat Monument may be on the agenda. Email forthcoming to confirm.
