MINUTES COLTON HALL MUSEUM AND CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING MONDAY, APRIL 23, 2012 4:00 P.M. COUNCIL CHAMBER, FEW MEMORIAL HALL OF RECORDS MONTEREY, CALIFORNIA 93940 CALL TO ORDER: Vice Chair Wojtkowski called the meeting to order at 4:00 p.m. and asked the Secretary to call the roll. ROLL CALL: Commissioners Present: Dias, Messenger, Rodriguez, Schneider, Wojtkowski Commissioners Absent: Greenwald (Excused), Han (Excused) Ex-Officio and Staff Present: Museums, Cultural Arts and Archives Manager Dennis Copeland, Recording Secretary Teresa Nash CONSENT ITEMS Approval of Minutes: 1. Colton Hall Museum and Cultural Arts Commission meeting of Monday, March 26, 2012 Action: Approved as submitted (5-0-2, Greenwald, Han absent). PUBLIC COMMENTS: None. INFORMATIONAL REPORTS & STAFF COMMENTS 2. Museum and Cultural Arts Division Activity Report - March 2012 Action: Report received. Museums, Cultural Arts and Archives Manager Copeland stated that at the last Commission meeting the Commission approved the Colton Hall Music Series fundraising letter and planned for the Commissioners to stuff the signed letters in the Museums Administration Office. The Commission set Monday, April 30 at 9:00 a.m. and Commissioners Messenger, Schneider, Rodriguez, and Wojtkowski volunteered to fold and stuff letters. Commissioner Wojtkowski added this would be a good chance to add a personal note to anyone you know on the mailing list. Museums, Cultural Arts and Archives Manager Copeland also reported on upcoming volunteer opportunities for the Commissioners, including tours of PBL for City staff on May 18 & 19. The tours are scheduled for 9:30 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., and 2:30 p.m. on each day. Contact Museums Administrative Assistant Claire Rygg to volunteer. 1  COLTON HALL MUSEUM AND CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION MINUTES: MONDAY, APRIL 23, 2012 Manager Copeland reported the Gudny Campbell textile exhibit opened on April 20 at the Alvarado Gallery. Approximately 60 people attended and were a very enthusiastic group. Commissioner Wojtkowski inquired how often we have show openings at the Alvarado Gallery and how we promote them. Museums, Cultural Arts and Archives Manager Copeland stated that normally artist announces the opening through their contacts. City Museums and Cultural Arts also distributes a public announcement of the event or exhibit which announces the opening. Commissioner Wojtkowski asked that the Commission be notified ahead of time for art openings. Commissioner Wojtkowski said it would be helpful if the Alvarado Gallery Subcommittee met prior to next meeting regarding serving wine. Museums, Cultural Arts and Archives Manager Copeland reported that staff is currently working with the Marriott on this issue and will report on status in a future Commission meeting. Museums, Cultural Arts and Archives Manager Copeland reported that 60 people attended the Saturday tours of Pacific Biological Lab on April 21 and $471 was received in donations and book sales (photo bookplated Cannery Row). Book sales comprised $135. Staff time for the tours and preparation equaled 8-1/4 hours. Seven volunteers devoted a total of 17-18 hours. Museums, Cultural Arts and Archives Manager Copeland reported the Cannery Row Foundation will hold tours on May 12 to celebrate Ed Ricketts birthday (May 14th). In June the City will provide PBL-docent led tours of the Lab. Museums, Cultural Arts and Archives Manager Copeland announced that as a part of National Museum Month, staff will be hosting a series of history talks on Sundays (except Mother’s Day) in Colton Hall starting on May 2 at 2:00 p.m. with a talk and book signing by Ray March, author of River in Ruin: The Story of the Carmel River. Commissioner Wojtkowski asked that the Commission receive the announcement for the May talks as soon as possible. PUBLIC APPEARANCE New Business: 3. Receive Report on Colton Hall Music Series April Concert Action: Report received. Museums, Cultural Arts and Archives Manager Copeland reported that the Bolero Brothers concert cost was $500 plus a chair rental fee of $300. The event and its preparation required 10 hours of staff time. 80 people attended and $357 was received in donation. Commissioner Messenger said she wasn’t able to register because there were 120 people already on the list. Manager Copeland stated that Commissioners would not necessarily need to reserve a space unless they have a party of guests. However, it is helpful to the staff to know when Commissioners plan to attend an event. Commissioner Wojtkowski stated that all three concerts have done well this year. 2  COLTON HALL MUSEUM AND CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION MINUTES: MONDAY, APRIL 23, 2012 4. Approve Expenditure of Artifact Acquisition Funds for Bill Johnk Collection Museum, Cultural Arts and Archives Manager Copeland stated that Bill Johnk has offered the City the purchase of his Cannery Row Models Research Collection for $1,500. In 1998 and 1999, the City acquired Bill Johnk’s detailed models of the PBL and Wing Chong Grocery buildings. The collection includes photographs, drawings, and other materials relevant to the models and the history of Cannery Row. The Bill Johnk models of PBL and the Wing Chong Grocery are currently at the Monterey Conference Center and the model of the Cannery Row showing the locations of Steinbeck’s novel Cannery Row is owned by the Oakland Museum of California. Johnk also researched and designed a fourth model of Cannery Row which was not completed. Museums, Cultural Arts and Archives Manager Copeland stated that Mr. Johnk spent over $10,000 creating all four models and is offering his collection to the City for $1,500. Commissioner Dias suggested taking pictures of the models to display like we do during City tours of the Lab. Museums, Cultural Arts and Archives Manager Copeland said that staff plans to display some photos of the Lab model during City tours. Commissioner Wojtkowski suggested asking The Clement Hotel General Manager John Turner to make a sign to install by the Clement Hotel to help identify Pacific Biological Laboratories. Commissioner Rodriguez inquired if the $1,500 includes the Sea of Cortez. Museums, Cultural Arts and Archives Manager Copeland stated yes plus the important book on Ed Ricketts, The Outer Shores. Commissioner Messenger stated the Wing Chong model needs some touch up work. Museums, Cultural Arts and Archives Manager Copeland said that Cultural Arts Assistant Chalet Booker has worked on the model and will be continuing. Also, Mr. Johnk has volunteered to touch up and make repairs on the models if we need additional assistance. On a motion by Commissioner Dias, seconded by Commissioner Messenger, and carried by the following vote, the Colton Hall Museum and Cultural Arts Commission approved the expenditure of $1,500 for Artifact Acquisition (101-2662) for the acquisition of the Bill Johnk Cannery Row Models Research Collection: AYES: 5 COMMISSIONERS: Dias, Messenger, Rodriguez, Schneider, Wojtkowski NOES: 0 COMMISSIONERS: None ABSENT: 2 COMMISSIONERS: Greenwald, Han 5. Approve Acquisition of Eldon Dedini Drawings Museums, Cultural Arts and Archives Manager Copeland reported that David and Christine Armanasco donated 11 original drawings by Eldon Dedini to the City of Monterey. He said the restaurant drawings were commissioned from 1997 through 2001 for a special issue of the national dining periodical, DiRoma, “Distinguished Dining in North America.” Museums, Cultural Arts and Archives Manager Copeland stated if the collection is approved, staff would plan to exhibit the cartoons at the Alvarado Gallery. Commissioner Rodriguez inquired if we have rights to use the images on cards that we can sell. Mr. Dedini donated many of his materials and artwork to a university. Mr. Copeland stated that staff would need to inquire about intellectual rights and copyright which could affect reproduction of the artwork. Commissioner Wojtkowski suggested an exhibit of the Dedini drawings along with the Bill Johnk Collection and to invite donors. The art exhibit could have Cannery Row theme. Mr. Copeland noted that the Dedini drawings are depictions of restaurant scenes. 3  COLTON HALL MUSEUM AND CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION MINUTES: MONDAY, APRIL 23, 2012 On a motion by Commissioner Fatima, seconded by Commissioner Messenger, and carried by the following vote, the Colton Hall Museum and Cultural Arts Commission approved the donation from David and Christine Armanasco of the 11 Eldon Dedini restaurant cartoon collection: AYES: 5 COMMISSIONERS: Dias, Messenger, Rodriguez, Schneider, Wojtkowski NOES: 0 COMMISSIONERS: None ABSENT: 2 COMMISSIONERS: Greenwald, Han COMMISSIONER COMMENTS: Commissioner Wojtkowski asked that Community Services and Library Director Kim Bui-Burton give the Commission a budget update at their next meeting. NEXT MEETING:  The next regularly scheduled meeting of the Colton Hall Museum and Cultural Arts Commission is Monday, May 21, 2012 at 4:00 p.m., City Council Chamber.
