MINUTES COLTON HALL MUSEUM AND CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION Special Meeting Friday, November 9, 2012 4:00 PM CITY COUNCIL CHAMBERS, FEW MEMORIAL HALL OF RECORDS MONTEREY, CALIFORNIA Commissioners Present: Dias, Greenwald, Han, Rodriguez, Schneider, Wojtkowski Commissioners Absent: Messenger Ex-Officio and Staff Museums, Cultural Arts and Archives Manager Dennis Members Present: Copeland, Recording Secretary Teresa Nash Ex-Officio Commissioners are non-voting members, appointed pursuant to MCC § 2-11. CALL TO ORDER Chair Greenwald called the meeting to order and asked for a moment of silence in memory of Commissioner Tandy Messenger, who passed away earlier this week. The Commission talked about Tandy’s vibrancy and passion for the arts and said she will be greatly missed. Chair Greenwald stated that at the next Commission meeting we will be selecting music for the Colton Hall Music Series. He said that with Tandy’s passing, we need a Commissioner to fill her spot on the Colton Hall Music Subcommittee and asked for a Commissioner to volunteer. Commissioner Han agreed to serve on the subcommittee. PUBLIC COMMENTS None. New Business 1. Selection of Artists in Three Art Shows for Exhibit at Alvarado Gallery, 2013 (Continued from October 22, 2012) Action: The Colton Hall Museum and Cultural Arts Commission approved the selection of artists for three shows at the Alvarado Gallery for 2013 (6-0-1, Messenger absent). Museums, Cultural Arts and Archives Manager Copeland noted there was an error in the agenda report and that there are nine (9) artist submissions for the Commission to review instead of eight (8) as noted in the agenda report. He distributed an updated Applicant List which included the artist’s application missing from the agenda report attachment. He gave a Power Point slide presentation showing the nine artists submissions for the three 2013 art shows to be exhibited at the Alvarado Gallery. Museums, Cultural Arts and Archives Manager Copeland reviewed the criteria for the artist submissions, including residency, themes, and selection criteria. Commissioner Wojtkowski noted that there are two apparent submissions from people who do not live in Monterey County, which does not meet the criteria, and he suggested that the Commission look at all of the other submissions first to see if we can find artists that we want. Colton Hall Museum and Cultural Arts Commission Minutes Friday, November 9, 2012 Commissioner Greenwald stated that some of the artists may not live here but have a huge presence here. Commissioner Rodriguez stated that if we state “Monterey County” as part of the criteria on the application then we should be strict with that, since that’s how we advertise it. Manager Copeland noted that based on her submission materials, artist Dulcie Dee does not meet the Monterey County requirement. Commissioner Wojtkowski motioned to remove the submission of San Francisco artist Dulcie Dee from the selection list due to not meeting the criteria of being from Monterey County, Commissioner Han seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. Museums, Cultural Arts and Archives Manager Copeland stated that if you select a submission with sculptures, the sculptures can be paired with another artist not displaying sculptures since the sculptures will be exhibited in the Alvarado Gallery cases. This will provide additional space for another artist. The Commissioners discussed the different artists and the different types of mediums used for their artwork and what would be entailed in installing exhibitions in the gallery. Museums, Cultural Arts and Archives Manager Copeland stated the artist would provide everything needed to install their artwork and will work with staff for the installation. Commissioner Rodriguez recommended that the Commission select their top three submissions along with an alternate selection. On consensus, the Commission selected the following artist submissions: Audrey Fontaine, Polly Osborne, Aromas Hills Artisans, and Terese Garcia, with Don Gruber as the alternative selection. On a motion by Commissioner Wojtkowski, seconded by Commissioner Dias, and carried by the following vote, the Colton Hall Museum and Cultural Arts Commission approved the selection of Audrey Fontaine, Polly Osborne, Aromas Hills Artisans, Terese Garcia, and Don Gruber as the alternative artist submissions for the Alvarado Gallery for 2013: AYES: 6 COMMISSIONERS: Dias, Greenwald, Han, Rodriguez, Schneider, Wojtkowski NOES: 0 COMMISSIONERS: None ABSENT: 1 COMMISSIONERS: Messenger COMMISSIONER COMMENTS None.
