Action: Report received.
Museums, Cultural Arts and Archives Manager Copeland reported great success with History
Fest and is looking forward to next year’s event. He stated the difference in the Colton Hall

the Vizcaino-Serro Oak mural would be located. Manager Copeland said staff is looking at a
spot on the Recreation Trail below the Lower Historic Park. Community Services and Library
Director Bui-Burton stated this project was approved by the Historic Preservation Commission
about 8 years ago.

4. Approval of Donation of Painting from Kusadasi, Turkey Sister City Delegation
Action: The Colton Hall Museum and Cultural Arts Commission approved the donation of
the painting entitled “Traditional Symbol of Flowers” by Tulay Aladag from the Kusadasi,
Turkey Sister City Delegation for inclusion in the City of Monterey Art Collection (5-0-1,
Schneider absent).
Museums, Cultural Arts and Archives Manager Copeland stated this is a special kind of painting
done in an ancient painting style called marbling and that there are very few people who reach
this master level. He said the painting was presented to Mayor Della Sala during the Sister City
Signing and Reception held in Colton Hall on August 23.
The Commissioners viewed the painting and asked how it was done and how the flowers were
added. Manager Copeland said he will do more research on the technique used for adding
flowers to the marbled painting.
Commissioner Han inquired on the estimated value of the painting. Manager Copeland stated it
has not been appraised yet. Commissioner Dias inquired where the painting will be located.
Manager Copeland stated it will most likely go in a City office. Commissioner Greenwald
suggested that wherever it is located that it is labeled with an explanation of where the painting
came from.
On a motion by Commissioner Rodriguez, seconded by Commissioner Han, and carried by the
following vote, the Colton Hall Museum and Cultural Arts Commission approved the donation of
the painting entitled “Traditional Symbol of Flowers” by Tulay Aladag from the Kusadasi, Turkey

Museums, Cultural Arts and Archives Manager Copeland reported that the Music Selection

an alternate choice. He said some concerns with selecting Farkhad Khudyev is the price and
recommended negotiating with him on cost. He said staff will work with him on the cost.

Colton Hall Museum and Cultural Arts Commission Minutes Monday, November 26, 2012
Commissioner Wojtkowski asked why did Mr. Khudyev give us a range in price. Manager
Copeland stated it depends on how many people are involved in the concert. Commissioner
Greenwald stated the music is fantastic, but the price is too high. He said if they are willing to
reduce their price, we would have them, if not, then we go with James Woolwine.
Commissioner Rodriguez stated that the Fundraising Subcommittee is having trouble getting
money from donors for music series.
Commissioner Wojtkowski said if they are that good, then $1,000 - $1,500 would be doable.
Commissioner Dias suggested we do not pay more than $1,500 for Farkhad Khudyev and said
the Commission has also discussed doing four concerts this year, so if the price is right maybe
we can do all four.
Commissioner Wojtkowski said we should hold out to see how much money we receive before
we decide on a fourth concert.
On a motion by Commissioner Dias, seconded by Commissioner Han, and carried by the
following vote, the Colton Hall Museum and Cultural Arts Commission approved the selection of
Tree Top Trio, Juan Sanchez, Farkhad Khudyev (with the stipulation that the cost does not
exceed $1,500), with James Woolwine as the alternate:
AYES: 5 COMMISSIONERS: Dias, Greenwald, Han, Rodriguez, Wojtkowski
NOES: 0 COMMISSIONERS: None
ABSENT: 1 COMMISSIONERS: Schneider
COMMISSIONER COMMENTS
Commissioner Wojtkowski said that with two Commissioners leaving, we should solicit young
people from the community to bring a younger person on the commission. He reported that the
Museum Of Monterey has a new exhibit opening called “Missions in Mexico.”
Commissioner Rodriguez said she is not going to be reappointed to the Commission and that it
was a gut wrenching decision for her. She said she absolutely loved working on this
commission for the past four years. If the Angel raffle comes back – I’m in. She said she
hopefully found a replacement for her position on the Commission and that person has an
interview tomorrow with the Mayor. She asked the Commissioners if she could get a picture
with them for her scrapbook.
Commissioner Dias said she really enjoyed Dennis’ talk at the Pacific Grove Heritage.
Commissioner Greenwald stated this is his final night as Chair for the Commission and said
everyone made it very easy for me.
Community Services and Library Director Bui-Burton said we all really appreciate your services.
All of you have been involved on a personal level as well as on a Commission level.
