4. Receive Museum and Cultural Arts Division Activity Report - January 2013
Action: Report received.
Museums, Cultural Arts and Archives Manager Copeland Dennis reported that all facilities have
shown a nice increase in attendance from the previous year; 96 people attended the Tree Top
Trio concert on January 8 and the Chamber Music Donation Fund received $294; and 101
people attended the Khudyev Brothers Recital with Aleksey Klyushnik on Tuesday, February 12
and we received approximately $500 in donations. Manager Copeland reminded the
Commissioners they need volunteers for the Cannery Row Tour on March 2.
Commissioner Wojtkowski inquired what is involved in the City Ambassador Club. Museums,
Cultural Arts and Archives Manager Copeland stated that Assistant City Manager Mike
McCarthy spearheaded this pilot program for City staff who would be able to answer questions
for visitors and residents on locations and the history of Monterey. He said this is a diverse
group of staff given the different departments involved and is also in concert with State Parks.
So we can better direct people.
Museums, Cultural Arts and Archives Manager Copeland showed a giclee of the painting “Kitty”
and said the digital imaging is amazing. Commissioner Wojtkowski inquired if the City is going
to reproduce and sell these giclees. Community Services and Library Director Bui-Burton stated
that staff selected certain pieces to reproduce to sell and that the cost has not been determined
yet. Commissioner Dias also inquired if we are also going to create note cards with these
images. Manager Copeland said once we have the digital copy we can make additional prints
and/or note cards. Commissioner Evans inquired if the copies will be numbered. Manager
Copeland stated they will establish a numbering system.

Action: The Colton Hall Museum and Cultural Arts Commission adopted the Colton Hall

Museums, Cultural Arts and Archives Manager Copeland reviewed the agenda report and

Commissioners could have more time to review the Colton Hall Museum Conditions Update and
Preservation Maintenance Program. He stated this document will be the basis for any future
changes to the Colton Hall building and will also be reviewed and approved by the Historic
Preservation Commission.
Commissioner Wojtkowski said at the last meeting he had questions regarding ADA
accessibility and inquired if that portion of the plan will come from the Building Division.
Museums, Cultural Arts and Archives Manager Copeland stated that the consultant kept it
general because the City’s ADA plan is not finalized yet. He also stated this Preservation
Maintenance program will help us daily, it is a dynamic document so we can preserve Colton
