MINUTES MUSEUMS AND CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION 11/23/2020 4:00 PM MONTEREY, CALIFORNIA Commissioners present: Castagna, Evans, O’Neil, Sovereign, Wall, Wojtkowski Commissioner Absent: Peake Staff Present: Library & Museums Director Waite, Administrative Assistant Garibaldi, Artifacts Specialist Leininger CALL TO ORDER Chair O’Neil called the meeting to order at 4:06 pm. ROLL CALL CONSENT ITEMS On a motion by Commissioner Wojtkowski, seconded by Commissioner Evans and carried by the following vote, the Museums and Cultural Arts Commission approved the minutes: AYES: 6 COMMISSIONERS: Castagna, Evans, O’Neil, Sovereign, Wall, Wojtkowski NOES: 0 COMMISSIONERS: NONE ABSENT: 1 COMMISSIONERS: Peake ABSTAIN: 0 COMMISSIONERS: NONE RECUSED: 0 COMMISSIONERS: NONE Approval of Minutes 1. July 27, 2020 (Not a project under CEQA per Article 20, Section 15378 and under General Rule Article 5, Section 15061) Action: Approved Vice Chair Wojtkowski commented that he was unable to find who is responsible for the study that would connect Old Town to the rec trail. He asked for Waite’s assistance to learn whether the study is proceeding forward. ***End of Consent Agenda*** PUBLIC COMMENTS Chair O’Neil opened public comments: no public comments. INFORMATIONAL REPORTS & STAFF COMMENTS 2. Receive Museums and Cultural Arts Division Activity Report – July - October 2020 (Not a project under CEQA per Article 20, Section 15378 and under General Rule Article 5, Section 15061) Action: Received and discussed Waite introduced and welcomed back Artifacts Specialist Jordan Leininger who recently returned to work for Museums. She reviewed the activity report and highlighted the Cannery Row Days program that took place from September to November 2020. Leininger reported that he had cleaned Colton Hall in preparation for reopening and continued to provide routine upkeep. Wojtkowski inquired if Leininger was the sole Museums staff member aside from the Director. Waite confirmed. O’Neil thanked him for his work. Sovereign asked about the deconstruction of the stables. Wojtkowski expressed thanks to the City of Monterey’s Public Works Director who was able to combine the deconstruction with another scheduled project. PUBLIC APPEARANCE 3. Receive Draft Reopening Plan for Colton Hall Museum (Not a project under CEQA per Article 20, Section 15378 and under General Rule Article 5, Section 15061) Action: Received, discussed Leininger reviewed the draft reopening plan and provided ideas to offer private tours. O’Neil inquired about recording a general Colton Hall tour and providing an option to schedule a private tour for more specific inquiries. Wojtkowski agreed it was a great idea to offer both a web tour and private tour. COMMISSIONER COMMENTS Evans watched the PBL and Cannery Row tours and commended Eric Palmer for his excellent videography. He recommended splitting the tour into shortened pieces. Sovereign applauded the work of Leininger. Wojtkowski hopes that the MCAC meetings continue regularly. He asked about the status of the Monterey Museum of Art. O’Neil wished everyone a Happy Thanksgiving.
