MINUTES MUSEUMS AND CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION 08/05/2021 4:00 PM COUNCIL CHAMBER, 580 PACIFIC ST. MONTEREY, CALIFORNIA AND ZOOM TELECONFERENCE MONTEREY, CALIFORNIA Commissioners present: Castagna, Evans, O’Neil, Peake*, Sovereign, Wojtkowski * Participated remotely by videoconference Commissioner Absent: None Staff Present: Library & Museums Director, Administrative Assistant, Artifacts Specialist Ex-Officio Commissioners are non-voting members, appointed pursuant to MCC § 2-11. CALL TO ORDER Chair O’Neil called the meeting to order at 4:01 p.m. 1. Confirm Annual Appointments for Chair and Vice Chair for Fiscal Year 2021-2022 (Not a project under CEQA per Article 20, Section 15378 and under General Rule Article 5, Section 15061) Action: Confirmed Chair and Vice Chair Waite confirmed the appointment of Commissioner Wojtkowski as Chair and Commissioner Evans as Vice-Chair. Incoming Chair Wojtkowski and Museums Commissioners thanked O'Neil for his service as chair for the past year and a half. ROLL CALL CONSENT ITEMS On a motion by Commissioner Castagna, seconded by Commissioner Evans and carried by the following vote, the Museums and Cultural Arts Commission approved the Consent Item: AYES: 6 COMMISSIONERS: Castagna, Evans, O’Neil, Peake, Sovereign, Wojtkowski NOES: 0 COMMISSIONERS: NONE ABSENT: 0 COMMISSIONERS: NONE ABSTAIN: 0 COMMISSIONERS: NONE RECUSED: 0 COMMISSIONERS: NONE Approval of Minutes 2. June 9, 2021 (Not a project under CEQA per Article 20, Section 15378 and under General Rule Article 5, Section 15061) Action: Approved ***End of Consent Agenda*** PUBLIC COMMENTS The administrative assistant explained to the public how to participate in the virtual meeting and provide public comment. Chair Wojtkowski opened public comments: no public comments. INFORMATIONAL REPORTS & STAFF COMMENTS Museums and Cultural Arts Commission Minutes 8/5/2021 4:00:00 PM 3. Receive an Update on Reopening of City Museums (Not a project under CEQA per Article 20, Section 15378 and under General Rule Article 5, Section 15061) Action: Received Waite provided an update on the reopening of City Museums. Pacific Biological Labs is offering monthly tours of the second Saturday led by volunteer docents. Colton Hall is open 4 days per week through August. There were no public comments heard on the matter. 4. Receive Museums and Cultural Arts Division Monthly Activity Report (Not a project under CEQA per Article 20, Section 15378 and under General Rule Article 5, Section 15061) Action: Received Artifacts Specialist Leininger reviewed highlights from the activity report. The Western Flyer plans to return to Monterey next year. There were no public comments heard on the matter. COMMISSIONER COMMENTS O’Neil asked about the Visitors Center. Sovereign expressed concern about the process for rotating Commission chairs. He would like to see a vote versus solely an appointment based on time served. Evans highlighted the Cell Phones tour data that shows increased usage during closure and suggested to consider adding additional stops. He asked about the development of the Path of History. Peake provided a warm thanks to Commissioner O’Neil for chairing during 2020.
