This meeting was held with a combination of in-person and teleconference attendance, pursuant
to the Ralph M. Brown Act, Calif. Government Code section 54953(e)(1)(C) and the Council's
resolution authorizing teleconference attendance at public meetings.
CALL TO ORDER
Chair Evans called the meeting to order at 4:00 p.m.
ROLL CALL
Commissioners Peake and Sovereign were absent.
CONSENT ITEMS
On a motion by Commissioner Wojtkowski, seconded by Commissioner Thomas, and carried by
the following vote, the Museums and Cultural Arts Commission approved the minutes:

2. Receive Update from Library & Museums Director (Not a project under CEQA, per Article 20,

Library & Museums Director Edwards congratulated Artifacts Specialist Leininger on his
promotion to regular part-time status. He provided updates, including notification of funding for a
collection assessment of Colton Hall and Old Jail. Commissioners asked questions.
There was no public comment.
3. Receive Museums and Cultural Arts Division Activity Report (Not a project under CEQA per
Article 20, Section 15378 and under General Rule Article 5, Section 15061)
Action: Received and discussed
Leininger shared September highlights. Pacific Biological Lab will now have open hours versus
scheduled tours in the afternoon. He introduced a CSUMB service learner who was completing
service with Museums.
There was no public comment.
PUBLIC APPEARANCE
4. Discuss and Approve Strategic Plan Priorities for Fiscal Year 2022-2023 (Not a project under
CEQA, per Article 20, Section 15378 and under General Rule Article 5, Section 15061)
Action: Received, discussed, and approved
Edwards reviewed the priorities and reported that he met with the Strategic Plan Priorities
subcommittee (O’Neil, Wojtkowski present; Sovereign absent) to discuss. Commissioners
discussed and suggested there be an ad-hoc subcommittee for Colton Hall and the Path of
History. A request was made for a City Attorney’s Office staff member to attend a Museums and
Cultural Arts Commissiog meeting to review ad-hoc subcommittees.
On a motion by Commissioner O’Neil, seconded by Commissioner Castagna, and carried by the
following vote, the Museums and Cultural Arts Commission approved the Strategic Plan
Priorities:
AYES: 5 COMMISSIONERS: Castagna, Evans, O’Neil, Thomas, Wojtkowski
NOES: 0 COMMISSIONERS: NONE
ABSENT: 2 COMMISSIONERS: Peake and Sovereign
ABSTAIN: 0 COMMISSIONERS: NONE

COMMISSIONER COMMENTS
Wojtkowski reported that the Dali Museum, formerly housed at the Maritime Museum, has now
closed. A meeting to discuss the future of the site will take place next week.
O’Neil suggested that the City of Monterey open a City museum and requested to agendize this
topic. He thanked the CSUMB Service Learner for assistance and reiterated the need to
improve communication between the Commission and cultural arts organizations in Monterey.
Evans concurred with previous Commissioner comments.

the body at a subsequent meeting concerning any City matter, or direct staff to place a
