MINUTES MUSEUMS AND CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING 04/06/2023 4:00 PM COUNCIL CHAMBER, 580 PACIFIC STREET, AND ZOOM TELECONFERENCE MONTEREY, CALIFORNIA Commissioners present: Castagna, Evans, O’Neil, Peake, Sovereign, Thomas, Wojtkowski Commissioner Absent: None Staff Present: Library & Museums Director, Administrative Assistant, Museums Artifacts Specialist CALL TO ORDER Chair Evans called the meeting to order at 4:00 p.m. ROLL CALL PRESENTATIONS 1. Receive Presentation from Gary Spradlin of the Monterey History and Art Association (Not a project under CEQA per Article 20, Section 15378 and under General Rule Article 5, Section 15061) Action: Received presentation Monterey History and Art Association’s President Gary Spradlin presented the history and future possibilities of the Stanton Center, now called the Monterey History & Art at the Stanton Center. Commissioners asked questions and made comments There was no public comment on the matter. CONSENT ITEMS On a motion by Commissioner Thomas, seconded by Commissioner O’Neil, and carried by the following vote, the Museums and Cultural Arts Commission approved the minutes: AYES: 7 COMMISSIONERS: Castagna, Evans, O’Neil, Peake, Sovereign, Thomas, Wojtkowksi NOES: 0 COMMISSIONERS: NONE ABSENT: 0 COMMISSIONERS: NONE ABSTAIN: 0 COMMISSIONERS: NONE RECUSED: 0 COMMISSIONERS: NONE Approval of Minutes 2. February 2, 2023 (Not a project under CEQA per Article 20, Section 15378 and under General Rule Article 5, Section 15061) Action: Approved ***End of Consent Agenda*** PUBLIC COMMENTS Chair Evans opened public comments: No public comments. Museums and Cultural Arts Commission Minutes 4/6/2023 4:00:00 PM INFORMATIONAL REPORTS & STAFF COMMENTS 3. Receive Update from Library & Museums Director (Not a project under CEQA per Article 20, Section 15378 and under General Rule Article 5, Section 15061) Action: Received and discussed Library & Museums Director Edwards provided an update on Museum activities. Commissioners asked questions and made comments. There was no public comment on the matter. 4. Receive Museums and Cultural Arts Division Activity Report (Not a project under CEQA per Article 20, Section 15378 and under General Rule Article 5, Section 15061) Action: Received and discussed Edwards reviewed the Museums and Cultural Arts Division activity report. Commissioners asked questions and made comments. There was no public comment on the matter. COMMISSIONER COMMENTS Wojtkowksi distributed a postcard announcement for the plein air art event and shared information about the MMA Block Party on April 15. Thomas commented that the JACL held a successful teacher training program on Enduring Democracy. Sovereign suggested the Artifacts Specialist present on the buffalo soldiers at one of the upcoming Commission meetings. Castagna commented that Leininger could practice his presentation with the MCA Commission. Evans thanked Edwards for continuing to think about new ways to present Monterey. He commented that the app is a terrific idea and gave kudos to Edwards. NEXT MEETING The next meeting will take place on May 4, 2023.
