MUSEUMS AND CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING MINUTES Thursday, July 6, 2023 4:00 PM COUNCIL CHAMBER, 580 PACIFIC STREET, AND ZOOM TELECONFERENCE MONTEREY, CALIFORNIA Commissioners present: Castagna, Peake, Sovereign, Thomas Commissioner Absent: Evans, O’Neil, Wojtkowski Staff Present: Library & Museums Director, Administrative Assistant, Artifacts Specialist CALL TO ORDER Vice Chair Thomas called the meeting to order at 4:02 pm. ROLL CALL Commissioners Evans, O’Neil, and Wojtkowski were absent. 1. Confirm Annual Appointments for Chair and Vice Chair for Fiscal Year 2024 (Not a project under CEQA per Article 20, Section 15378 and under General Rule Article 5, Section 15061) Action: Confirmed annual appointments Commissioner Thomas accepted the role of Chair, and Commissioner Sovereign accepted the role of Vice Chair. There was no public comment on the matter. PRESENTATIONS 2. Recognition of Commissioner Peake (Not a project under CEQA per Article 20, Section 15378 and under General Rule Article 5, Section 15061) Action: Recognized Commissioner Peake for her service Chair Thomas expressed his appreciation to Peake for her service to the Commission, announcing that this would be her last meeting serving on the Commission. Library & Museums Director Edwards expressed his appreciation for the contributions of Commissioner Peake. Commissioners expressed their gratitude for her service. There was no public comment on the matter. CONSENT ITEMS On a motion by Commissioner Castagna, seconded by Commissioner Peake, and carried by the following vote, the Museums and Cultural Arts Commission approved the minutes: AYES: 4 COMMISSIONERS: Castagna, Peake, Sovereign, Thomas NOES: 0 COMMISSIONERS: NONE ABSENT: 3 COMMISSIONERS: Evans, O’Neil, Wojtkowski ABSTAIN: 0 COMMISSIONERS: NONE RECUSED: 0 COMMISSIONERS: NONE Museums and Cultural Arts Commission Minutes 7/6/2023 4:00:00 PM Approval of Minutes 3. May 4, 2023 (Not a project under CEQA per Article 20, Section 15378 and under General Rule Article 5, Section 15061) Action: Approved ***End of Consent Agenda*** PUBLIC COMMENTS Chair Thomas opened public comments: there were no public comments. INFORMATIONAL REPORTS & STAFF COMMENTS 4. Receive Update from Library & Museums Director (Not a project under CEQA per Article 20, Section 15378 and under General Rule Article 5, Section 15061) Action: Received and discussed Library & Museums Director Edwards provided an update on recent activities. Commissioners remarked that the recent MC Weekly article was fantastic. There was no public comment on the matter. 5. Receive Museums and Cultural Arts Division Activity Report (Not a project under CEQA per Article 20, Section 15378 and under General Rule Article 5, Section 15061) Action: Received and discussed Artifacts Specialist Leininger reviewed the Museums and Cultural Arts Division activity report. Commissioners complimented Leininger on the newly installed Buffalo Soldier exhibit. There was no public comment on the matter. PUBLIC APPEARANCE 6. Receive Overview of STQRY Digital Resource (Not a project under CEQA per Article 20, Section 15378 and under General Rule Article 5, Section 15061) Action: Received and discussed Library & Museums Director Edwards provided an overview of the STQRY digital resource. Edwards was thanked for his work on the project. There was no public comment on the matter. COMMISSIONER COMMENTS Castagna inquired about the timeline for filling the vacancy on the Commission. Thomas commented that the Monterey Japanese American Citizens League recently held a special presentation, Diving for History: Roy Hattori and the Monterey Abalone Fishery. He commented the importance of Hattori being the only Nisei diver in California. He again thanked Peake for her service. In addition, a Commissioner may provide a referral to staff or other resources for factual information, request staff to report back to the body at a subsequent meeting concerning any City matter, or direct staff to place a request to agendize a matter of business on a future agenda.
