MINUTES PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION MEETING CITY OF MONTEREY Wednesday, March 10, 2021 5:30 PM TELECONFERENCE MONTEREY, CALIFORNIA Commissioners Present: Crampton, Gibson, McCarthy, McEwen, Schmidt Commissioners Absent: Panetta, Spangler Staff Members Present: Assistant City Manager, Parks and Recreation Director, Interim Recreation and Community Services Manager, Park Operations Manager, Recreation Coordinator, Administrative Assistant CALL TO ORDER Chair Gibson called the meeting to order at 5:30pm. ROLL CALL PRESENTATIONS 1 Introduction of New Commissioner Cyd Crampton (Not a project under CEQA Article 20, Section 15378 and under General Rule Article 5, Section 15061) Action: Presentation given. 2 Presentation on the Status of the Parks and Recreation Department Operations for January and February 2021 (Not a project under CEQA Article 20, Section 15378 and under General Rule Article 5, Section 15061) Action: Presentation given. CONSENT ITEMS Approval of Minutes 3 Wednesday, January 13, 2021 Action: Approved with correction (5-0-2, Panetta and Spangler absent). ***End of Consent Agenda*** PUBLIC COMMENTS None. PUBLIC APPEARANCE 4 Review Parks and Recreation Commission Work Plan from 2019/2020 and Council Approved City Staff Work Program, and Discuss Proposed Priorities and Work Plan for 2020/2021 (Not a project under CEQA Article 20, Section 15378 and under General Rule Article 5, Section 15061) Action: The Parks and Recreation Commission reviewed the 2019/2020 Work Plan and Discussed Proposed Priorities for the 2020/2021 Work Plan. Staff will draft an updated Work Plan and present it at the next Parks and Recreation Commission Meeting. Parks and Recreation Commission Minutes 3/10/2021 5:30:00 PM INFORMATIONAL REPORTS & STAFF COMMENTS Director Larson reminded the Commissioners about the City Council Study Session regarding the Brown Act on Wednesday, March 24, 2021. She extended her thanks to her entire team. Interim Recreation and Community Services Manager Leon said that staff is working on summer programming. We will be offering a modified, Covid-19-safe summer park program. Camp Quien Sabe will not be happening this summer but staff is hopeful it will return in 2022. Getting close to moving forward with new registration software. Will continue to provide essential community services such as food distribution, blood drives and assisting with vaccine administration. Manager Marcuzzo suggested everyone go see the newly planted memorial trees at Shoreline Park; they should be blooming in about a week and half. COMMISSIONER COMMENTS Commissioner Schmidt said it is good to hear how vested staff is in our community. Looking forward to getting back to some normalcy. Commissioner McEwen said although Parks and Recreation staff is small, they are truly mighty. Commissioner Crampton is excited for this opportunity. Commissioner McCarthy welcomed Commissioner Crampton and thanked staff for keeping the face of Recreation out there in the community. Commissioner Gibson thanked staff for the contributions made to the community. Looks forward to hearing more good news at the next meeting. NEXT MEETING Wednesday, April 14, 2021.
