Montpelier  Tree  Board  Minutes   September  6,  2012     Attending:  John  Snell  (co-­‐chair),  Abby  Collihan,  Carole  Naquin,  John  Van  Deren,  Geoff   Beyer,  Bob  Troester  (volunteer)   Apologies:  Sarah  Hoffmeier  (co-­‐chair),     John  Snell  opened  the  meeting  by  thanking  the  watering  teams  for  the  fabulous  work   they’ve  done  this  summer.  He  noted  the  downtown  trees,  for  the  most  part,  look  better   than  they  have  in  a  long  time.     He  also  thanked  Bob  Troester  and  John  Akielaszek  for  their  continued  volunteer  efforts  at   several  workdays  this  summer.       The  minutes  of  the  August  meeting  were  reviewed  and  approved.     John  Snell  reported  a  workday  at  the  nursery  was  successful.  Most  of  the  trees  were   weeded,  mulched  and  guards  installed.  Geoff’s  crews  mowed.  Geoff  said  he  crews  can  till  up   several  rows  for  fall  and  spring  planting.     The  workday  originally  scheduled  for  September  14th  was  rescheduled  to  September  11.   Work  will  be  done  installing  fencing  and  mulch  on  the  trees  planted  at  Union  School  last   spring.     John  Snell  suggested  we  pursue  the  “Ginkgo  tree  leaf  drop”  as  a  fundraiser  and  focal  point   for  planting  trees  on  Barre  Street.  The  idea,  originally  put  forth  by  Carole,  is  to  hold  a  50/50   raffle  to  predict  the  day  the  big  Ginkgo  on  Barre  Street  drops  its  leaves.  Carole  or  John  will   get  the  article  about  the  tree  from  the  office  of  Fothergill  et  al.  Carole  will  work  up  some   graphics.  We  will  sell  tickets  at  Farmers  Market.  Details  to  still  work  out:  how  to  track   tickets  and  money.       John  Russell  stopped  into  the  meeting  to  say  the  large  (and  declining)  Sugar  Maple  tree  at   Bethany  Church  is  going  to  be  removed,  along  with  the  Apple  and  one  of  the  two  Honey   Locusts.  They  will  re-­‐plant  with  a  large  tree,  probably  a  Red  Oak.     Geoff  said  the  MHS  volunteers  will  help  with  tree  planting  on  Thursday,  Sept  20th,    9  -­‐  9:30   until  noon.  Carole  and  John  Snell  will  lead  planting  teams.  Details  to  be  worked  out  and   coordinated  by  Geoff.     John  Snell  will  walk  Barre  Street  and  make  notes  and  photos  of  potential  planting  sites.   Some  planting  will  be  done  this  fall  (Sept  20th  and  other)  Kevin  Casey  (Community   Development  Specialist)  asked  to  be  kept  informed  about  plans  for  planting  on  Barre  St.     Meeting  adjourned  at  6:30.     Next  meeting:  October  4th.  Note:  John  Snell  is  out  of  town  for  that  meeting.
