Tree Board

Minutes  for  Tree  Board  December  6th  meeting:   Attending:  John  Snell  (co-­‐chair),  Carole  Naquin,  John  Van  Deren,  Wendy  Blakeman,   Geoff  Beyer  (Tree  Warden),  Bob  Troester  (volunteer),  John  Akielaszek  (volunteer)     Review  minutes  of  past  meeting  (attached);  minutes  approved   Old  Business:     •  Summary  of  Barre  Street  planting  (John/Geoff):     Will  try  more  large  trees  in  the  spring;  john  will  try  raising  funds  from   landlords.  About  two  dozen  trees  were  planted  this  fall.       •  Update  on  American  Forestry  grant  (Geoff)     We  need  to  plant  six  more  trees  to  complete  the  grant  by  next   summer;  John  S  has  documentation  (before  and  after  photos)  of  all  planted   thus  far.   •  Update  on  nursery  (Geoff):  two  rows  rototilled.  John  suggested  planting  1-­‐2   dozen  trees/year     •  Update  regarding  2013/14  Budget    (Geoff)   New  Business:   •  12/12/12  Statehouse  presentation  of  UCF  Tree  Stewards  Community   award;  Geoff,  John  S  and  Sarah  will  all  attend  but  all  are  invited   •  Grant  opportunity  with  TD  Green  Streets:  Sarah  will  write  the  grant  for   Barre  St.  (Note:  Sarah  determined  we  are  not  eligible)     •  December  10  (Stone  Cutter  Way)  work  days     •  Donation  of  2  new  American  Chestnut  trees  in  Hubbard  Park  by  new   young  volunteer,  Earl  Fechter.  John  S  consulted  with  Geoff  on  planting   location  near  the  tower  and  planted  trees  with  Earl   •  January  meeting  will  be  informal  as  part  of  social  get-­‐together  at  Legislative   Welcome  (1/17)   •  Tree  “tags”  suggested  by  Sarah.  Plenty  of  interest;  to  be  discussed  at  later   meeting.   •  Tree  walk  map:  again,  lots  of  interest  but  no  action  plan.  John  S  shared  the   link  he  has  created  to  Google  Map  of  “special”  trees  in  Montpelier.  To  be   discussed  at  future  meeting   •  Hosting  UCF  volunteers  (1/24)   •  Planning  for  next  year:  John  asked  people  to  consult  the  Board’s  Plan  and   think  about  what  they  want  to  do  and  send  him  their  top  three  items     •  John  S  offered  to  again  write  the  annual  report  for  the  city   •  Kate  F  asked  us  to  support  “VT  Faces  of  Urban  Forestry”  with  a  story  about   Montpelier.  People  suggested  either  Mark  at  Shaws  and  Earl  Fechter.  John  S   will  pursue.   Next  meeting  will  be  February  7th
