Historic Landmarks Commission

Morgantown Historic Landmarks Commission April 19, 2017 The meeting was called to order at 7:03 pm at the Morgantown Public Safety Building. Attending : Shannon Tinnell, Jeanne Grimm, Bill Kawecki and Kathy Hanko. Absent: Rodney Pyles February minutes were approved. NEW BUSINESS: A request for review was received from EBI Consulting regarding installation of a new tower to replace an existing one at 129 High St. After discussion it was decided to send a letter stating that the Morgantown Historic Landmarks Commission had no objection to the project. Shannon will send the letter. The Commission has been approved for budget monies from the City of Morgantown to begin with the fiscal year in July. Some of the money will be used to help fund a workshop for real estate agents if we get a SHPO grant that was submitted on April 5th. We discussed the roundtable held last month. It was well-received and there are plans to host another one next year. Suggestions for next year’s presenters include Main Street Morgantown who was unable to come this year, the Mon County Clerks office and the Civil War Roundtable. OLD BUSINESS: There has been no new information on the Suncrest Survey. Jeanne will check on the progress to submission. It was noted that the bill in the State Legislature to increase tax credit for historic preservation projects was not passed this session. Bill shared with us that the Deckers Creek Pedestrian Bridge now has a project manager. We will wait to see if progress is made fast enough to be included in the year’s construction season. The Commission was notified that we are receiving 2 development grants from the State Historic Preservation Office. One will supply funds for repair of the old City Hall building parapet wall and front windows. The Assistant City Engineer is still looking for help and expertise with reclaiming documents damaged in the building’s basement. The other will fund Phase II of the WPA Walls Survey. The project at the Seneca Center may see some activity in the next few months. The County Courthouse Square renovation is ongoing. The old fountain taken out in the 1960’s was found in Westover and there is discussion about returning it. Bill will check with the County Commission and/or the Mon Co Landmarks Commission regarding the old marker that was discovered stored in the basement of the Courthouse.
