Historic Landmarks Commission

MORGANTOWN HISTORIC LANDMARKS COMMISSION April 17, 2019 The meeting was called to order at the Public Safety Building on Spruce Street. Attendance: Jeanne Grimm, Jessica Eichlin, Bill Kawecki and Kathy Hanko Visitors were Edward Pride from the Clarksburg City Library and Paula McClain from the Monongalia County Historical Landmarks Commission. The minutes were approved as presented. Paula spoke about the reorganization of the County HLC. They have applied for a CLG and will be looking to partner with us in the future on projects. Jeanne suggested that we may want to work on a project involving Tony Pietro contribution to stone structures in the County. The ones in the City have been identified with the Greenmont Historic District designation and the WPA Stone Walls Survey. The County is working on an historic marker for the Easton Elementary School. Paula also brought to our attention the Preservation Alliance of WV’s dinner meeting on September 21st at the Robinson Grand in Clarksburg. OLD BUSINESS: A letter has been sent in response to an inquiry regarding upgrading of communication towers on WVU’s Arnold Hall stating that the Commission anticipated no adverse results. Brochures to be published by the Commission are in progress of editing and then printing. Several have been produced by WVU students and one that identifies the work of the Commission. The Sabraton Survey has been edited. Ms Zimmerman has submitted 2 invoices for work completed. She submitted a draft of the survey to the State Historic Preservation Office. The HPIs need corrections and then submitted. The consensus is that the Roundtable in March was a success. Information was made available to those who attended and WVU students received experience in presenting their projects. The next deadline for the multisite designation of the WPA stone walls is September 30th. Indian Park Historic Marker: The information is with the State Culture and History Department where they are working on producing the marker. It has been approved by them and the City of Morgantown. The funds will come from the Commission’s budget. The Commission is considering a marker for the Oak Grove Cemetery. It may have a different message on the 2 sides-one about the cemetery and one about the Soldiers Memorial. There was no new business. Paula invited us to attend any of the County’s Landmarks Commission meetings that are held on the 3rd Thursdays at 11:30 at the Terra Café in Star City. The meeting was adjourned.
