Historic Landmarks Commission

MORGANTOWN HISTORIC LANDMARKS COMMISSION May 15, 2019 The meeting was called to order at 7:05 pm in the Public Safety building by Shannon Tinnell. Those present were Shannon Tinnell, Bill Kawecki, Jeanne Grimm and Kathy Hanko. The minutes of the April meeting were approved. NEW BUSINESS: The Proceedings and Papers recently published by the Monongalia County Historical Society includes an article on the Oak Grove Cemetery written by Jeanne Grimm and Christy Venham. Copies are available. The County Historic Landmarks Commission is in the process of reorganizing and getting a CLG designation. Kathy will communicate with Ed Hawkins who is on the commission to let them know we are willing to work on projects together and to encourage the many people in the county that are interested in history to become involved. OLD BUSINESS: Progress is being made on the Hazel Ruby McQuain Park at the riverfront. Bill shared recent drawings and pictures of the project slated for completion in 2020. The Facebook page is being maintained by Jessica Eichlin. As time allows, work continues on the wording for an historical plaque to be placed in the Oak Grove Cemetery. One side will have information about the cemetery and the other will have information about the Soldiers monument. A grant for a multisite Designation od WVP Stone Walls is being written which isn’t due until September 30th. The Indian Park plaque is in progress. Kathy will check with the State on an approximate completion date. The Sabraton Survey is complete. Jeanne will write a final report. The survey with HPI’s and a DVD will be placed at the Aull Center. Suggestions will be made to the WVU History Department for projects that their students may want to do. Now that the major projects are being completed, there will be time for the commission to work on producing brochures with information collected for the surveys and one on the function of the Commission. The next meeting will be a work session for editing and/or creating brochures. We have not received an annual report for 2018 from SHPO. Meeting was adjourned. Submitted by Kathy Hanko Secretary
