Historic Landmarks Commission

MORGANTOWN HISTORIC LANDMARKS COMMISSION June 19, 2019 The meeting was called to order at 7 pm at the Public Safety Building by President, Shannon Tinnell. Those in attendance were Shannon Tinnell, Jeanne Grimm, Jessica Eichlin and Kathy Hanko. Bill Kawecki was excused. The minutes from the May meeting were approved. OLD BUSINESS: The Indian Park marker is in queue at the manufacturers. Matt McGrew will notify us when any updates become available. Jessica is maintaining the Facebook account. She has posted information from the Sabraton Survey and will check on information to post regarding WVU’s Stansbury Hall which is due to be demolished in the near future. NEW BUSINESS: Jeanne met with Paula McClain, president of the Mon Co Historic Landmarks Commission. They discussed ways that the 2 organizations and WVU’s History Department can work together. One possible project could be to focus on the work of stonemason, Tony Pietro. Projects for the Morgantown Historic Landmarks Commission could be areas that have not been surveyed such as parts of Sabraton, South Hills, Hopecrest and the Marilla Administration Building. Students may be able to help with those. The wording for the historic marker at Oak Grove Cemetery were reviewed. Members were asked to send any suggestions to Jeanne. Five brochures were reviewed and edited if necessary. Those include the Morgantown Historic Landmarks Commission duties and the 5 surveyed districts, Cornerstones to Capstones: New Deal Era Stone Walls, WPA Walking Tour, the results of the Sabraton Survey, and WVU and the New Deal Walking Tour. Jeanne will check with Chris Fletcher to get a map of Morgantown with the districts marked. She will also check with Andrew Stacy, Communications Director with the City of Morgantown to find out what the procedure is to publish the brochures and meet the requirements of the City.
