Historic Landmarks Commission

MORGANTOWN HISTORIC LANDMARKS COMMISSION November 20, 2019 The meeting was called to order at 7:05 pm in the Public Safety building by Shannon Tinnell. Those present were Shannon Tinnell, Bill Kawecki, Jeanne Grimm, Jessica Eichlin, Kathy Hanko. The minutes of the October meeting were amended and approved. NEW BUSINESS: None OLD BUSINESS: The decision on the Multi Property Documentation for Stone Walls grant was postponed until March by SHPO. This negates the use of WVU students this year. The 3 walls selected are 8th street, Richwood Ave and Whitemore Park. The map of the 5 historic districts in Morgantown was approved by unanimous vote. It will be used by the Morgantown City Planner to create brochures promoting the Commission and on the City website. Three of the students who prepared brochures for their WVU class have responded positively to our request for printable files. They will be used for other brochures. Jeanne shared the report that was made in 2015 of Indian Park/Burrows cemetery. WVU students created it and recommended that an historic marker be placed. The marker was approved by the State and is ready to be installed. Bill and Kathy met with officials from BOPARC that maintains the area. They agreed with the placement site and will improve the area with new benches, garbage can and maintenance. Progress is on schedule at the Hazel Ruby McQuain Park at the riverfront. The Facebook page is being maintained by Jessica Eichlin. The historic plaque for Oak Grove Cemetery is pending at the State Archives and History Commission. The December meeting is canceled. There was discussion for a possible theme and speakers at the annual Roundtable in March. Meeting was adjourned. Submitted by Kathy Hanko Secretary
