MORGANTOWN HISTORIC LANDMARKS COMMISSION
January 15 , 2020
The meeting was called to order at 7:02 pm in the Public Safety Building by Shannon Tinnell.
Those present were Shannon Tinnell, Bill Kawecki, Jeanne Grimm, Jessica Eichlin, Kathy
Hanko.
The minutes of the November meeting were approved.
OLD BUSINESS: A survey of Hopecrest or South Hills will not be pursued because it does not
meet the criteria for an historic district.
The Marilla neighborhood will be considered for a survey when grants are available in the Fall. It
can then be considered for an historic district. It will be considered on the basis of being over 50
years old, having historic architecture, associated with an important person, event or information
potential.
The grant for the Multi Property Documentation for Stone Wall was submitted by the October
31st deadline. There has been no communication since the due date was extended. The 3 walls
selected are 8th street, Richwood Ave and Whitemore Park.
The brochures are not ready yet. The Communications Director is taking a leave and will work
on them when he returns.
The historic marker was submitted to SHPO for the Oak Grove Cemetery and it is pending.
The marker for Indian Park is ready for installation and will be done as soon as possible. Justin
Swiger, District 4 Sign Shop Crew Chief will notify the Commission when they are ready.
Jessica maintains the Facebook page. When the Indian Park marker is installed , she will post
the information. It will be shared with the WVU History Department Alumni page. A question was
asked through Facebook for information regarding the sale of the Michael Kerns property in
Greenmont. It was part of a 4 lot offering and has not been sold.
New Business: The 2020 Roundtable is scheduled for March 25 at the Aull Center from 7-9 pm.
The area of focus will be Historic Preservation. Possible ideas for presenters are the Mon Co
Historical Landmark Commission collaboration, Jennifer Thornton, WVU instructor and 2
students, Paula McClain of the Mills Group and Bryson Van Nostrand the architect for the City
Hall renovation. It may be possible to do a walk-through tour from 6-7 that evening. Kathy will do
the refreshments and Jessica will do a poster for advertisement.
Meeting was adjourned.
