MORGANTOWN HISTORIC LANDMARKS COMMISSION
August 19, 2020
The meeting was called to order at 7:05 pm at our first Zoom meeting since
quarantine by Shannon Tinnell.
Those participating were Shannon Tinnell, Bill Kawecki, Jessica Eichlin,
and Kathy Hanko.
The minutes of the February meeting were approved.
NEW BUSINESS: Bill moved to accept Michael Ghioulis as the principal
investigator for the Multi Property Documentation for Stone Walls grant. It
received a second and it was passed. Shannon has sent an email to SHPO
asking to extend the grant deadline due to Covid-19 restrictions with WVU
students. She will also update the management of the City of Morgantown
and email Carol Allen to ask that the funds designated be extended to next
year’s budget. The contract will be checked for the stipulations regarding
payment.
The 3 Zackquill Morgan plaques found during the Hotel Morgan renovation
will be cleaned and displayed at the hotel when it reopens.
OLD BUSINESS: The Marilla Survey is waiting for the next round of
funding.
There has been no collaboration with the Mon Co Historical Society.
Bill and Jessica will investigate hosting a virtual roundtable.
Historical plaques for downtown will be revisited in the future with the
Convention and Visitors Bureau.
The brochures are not ready yet. The Communications Director was on
leave and will work on them now that he is back at work. Kathy will meet by
phone on Monday the 24th with Mr. Stacy to check on his progress.
The historic marker has been submitted to SHPO for the Oak Grove
Cemetery and it is pending. Kathy will contact them to check on the
progress.
Jessica maintains the Facebook page. She is looking for more items of
interest to post.
Hazel Ruby McQuain Park renovation is complete. Jessica will put an
article about it on the Facebook page.
Shannon shared that her new book is available. It is titled “A Culinary
History of WV from Ramps to Pepperoni Rolls”.

> The minutes of the January meeting were approved.
> NEW BUSINESS: Jeanne has helped a WVU student with research resources regarding an historic nomination for
Pietro’s castle. The owners did not approved of the project.
> OLD BUSINESS: The Marilla Survey is waiting for the next round of funding.

> The 2020 Roundtable is scheduled for March 25 at the Aull Center. It will start at 6:30 with a tour of the City
Building renovation. The area of focus will be Historic Preservation. Presenters are Paula McClain, the Mon Co
Historical Landmark Commission Chair who will talk on the work on documentation of the Morgantown Ordinance
Works and Jennifer Thornton, WVU instructor and 2 students will share their research on African-American schools
in WV. Jeanne will recruit a speaker regarding the City Hall renovation. Shannon will contact Dominic Claudio to
see if he will share information about any of his local preservation projects. Bill will see if Jane Cardi would be
willing to talk about plans for the OLD Post Office Building. Jeanne will contact Pam Ball of the Morgantown
History Museum to see if she has anything to contribute. The Commission can do a brief on the Indian Park marker.
Kathy will do the refreshments and Jessica will do a poster for advertisement.
> The idea of installing informational plaques in downtown was revisited. Shannon will contact Barbara Watkins of
Main Street Morgantown to see if we can work together with their design group. They meet on the third
Wednesdays of the month at 8 am.
> Hazel Ruby McQuain Park is on schedule. The City has recently contracted to build a kayak rental building and
lease it out.
