September 15, 2022, HRC Meeting - Call to order: 6:34 PM Public Session: n/a - August 2022 minutes- vote to accept - Ash moved to accept meeting minutes, Danny seconds motion. Communications Commissioner updates - Tim: out of country - Ash ● BOE Meeting this week: making teachers take pride flags/other objects of acceptance down. Viewed as a political symbol “indoctrination.” Next BOE meeting is September 27, 2022. Ash plans to be there to continue speaking. Will update in October. ● Sundays event down by the river: Zoey cannot attend. Bonnie will be there and tend to the table. Don has materials for us to give out at the event. - Danny ● Shared immigration video with us. ● Issue with a CPS case where a child was taken out of mother’s custody due to substance use; state law prevented the child from being placed with other family members because they were not citizens. - Brian ● Committee meeting for racial equity strategic plan is booked. It is scheduled for Monday the 19th from 7:30 PM to 8:30 PM. Sent out to the NAACP. ● Jena is sharing it with the BLSA at the Law School. - Zoey ● N/a - Jena ● N/a - Bonnie ● Exhibit- Indigenous Appalachia is now up at WVU downtown library; features 15 artists and will be up until June 2023. ● Peace Tree Ceremony: Wednesday September 21, 2022, at Noon. Priority items HRC absorption of Minority Liaison Council - Ash: in favor of absorbing after the new year (2023). - Danny: Needs to be restructured, anyways, which requires a lot of work. - Emily & Officer Foster are not here.  - Jena: if not absorbing until after the new year, moving to wait for discussion. - Quick breakdown: ● Emily suggested to Danny and Ash that the HRC to absorb it because if not, it is very likely that it will cease to exist. - Conclusion: waiting until October for further discussion. Progress Reports Indigenous People’s Day - Bonnie: Danny, Brian, and Molly were in the last working group meeting. - Topic included how to further educate people on local history - Jena: if any sponsors are corporate/business and sympathetic to the movement, it would likely be worth getting them to speak out in front of city council, as city council tends to listen more when businesses/money are on the line. Another possibility would be putting together persons who are of Italian descent to put forth a narrative. - Going to propose a proclamation to be read. Looking ahead Commissioner announcements - Bonnie will be taking care of this weekend’s event - Next BOE meeting: September 27th at Mon Co. BOE office if folks want to speak/support.
