Minutes of the Annual Meeting
June 21, 2018

Call to order
The Annual meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Morgantown Public Library convened at the Morgantown
Public Library, on June 21, 2018. The meeting convened at 9:08am, Penny Pugh, President presiding, Kelly
Funkhouser, secretary.
Approval of the Minutes of the April 19, 2018 Annual Meeting
The minutes were accepted as corrected.
PUBLIC FORUM – None
CORRESPONDENCE AND COMMUNICATIONS – None
REPORTS OF COMMITTEES/OFFICERS
A. President – Penny Pugh reported that she had received feedback from the drop-in tech help every
Tuesday and Thursday from 1pm - 4pm. The patron was thrilled with the help he received from Aaron
Johnson.
B. Treasurer – The April 2018 Financial Statement was distributed, discussed and filed for audit.
REPORT OF THE LIBRARY DIRECTOR
Open positions
Clinton District – Part-time Library Technician: Interviews will be conducted today.
Aull Center – Part-time Library Technician: We are planning to hire the position by July 7, 2018.
Morgantown – Full-time Facilities Manager
Morgantown – Full-time Cataloger: We are planning on hiring late July to start early August.
Beanstack has been in use less than a month and users have logged 650 books and more than 1,000
minutes of reading.
Members of the Morgantown Area Chamber of Commerce receive a discount on ads placed in the
Dominion Post.
The pilot program with Westwood Middle School has been successful. The pilot 8th grade class of
approximately 30 students are using the Overdrive App with the school provided Chromebook (a laptop
that uses Google Chrome as its ‘operating system’). The time set aside for quiet reading is quiet and the
class is reading. The Morgantown Public Library System has seen a bump in statistics for children’s and
young adult’s reading.
The new website is in the content stage.
Sarah Palfrey is looking into a Scratch Coding Club and exploring Chromebooks for libraries.
The Morgantown Public Library System will be offering access to hoopla, a digital media service that
allows patrons to borrow movies, music, audiobooks, ebooks, comics on TV shows on a variety of
electronic devices. It is a pay as you go system.
Sarah Palfrey is forming partnerships with several local groups:

United Way of Monongalia and Preston County for their Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library
Launch at the Suncrest Center. United Way will be having a registration party at the
Morgantown Public Library next month.
WVU Humanities Center
Spark! Imagination and Science Center will be providing a program about Frankenstein in
October – this year is the 200th anniversary of the of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.
WVU Libraries and the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences participate in the
National Youth Sports Program. A part of this program is Book Day where “WVU librarians
visit camp and spend time talking about the importance of reading, even during the summer.”
During this program a book is given to each child. Sarah Palfrey is exploring helping with this
activity.
Sarah Palfrey has been a speaker for several training sessions including the West Virginia Community
Development Hub and the Clarksburg Service Area training.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS
Proposed Lease – Arnettsville – Sarah Palfrey distributed secondary responses to the original questions
from the Arnettsville Community Association. Discussion followed.
Plan for review of director – Penny Pugh asked several questions.
Clinton District Public Library – The roof is no longer leaking.
Discussion of Article: Sarah Palfrey pointed out the voter perception surveys and discussion followed.
NEW BUSINESS
The board agreed to a change in agenda to accommodate Sarah Palfrey’s need to attend interviews.
Budget – The FY2019 Budget was discussed. Linda Durfee moved that the budget be accepted as
presented. Sue Carpenter seconded the motion. The motion carried.
Election of Officers: Sue Carpenter moved that we continue with the current slate until the next
meeting. Linda Durfee seconded the motion. The motion carried. The current slate is as follows:

Secretary: Sue Carpenter
Member: Janet Paine
Sick leave reimbursement – The discussion was tabled until the next meeting.
