Morgantown Pedestrian Safety Board Meeting Minutes Public Safety Building – Training Room 1 4:30 – 5:30 PM August 13, 2018 The Morgantown Pedestrian Safety Board’s mission is to promote a walkable environment throughout the City by developing safe, attractive, and accessible walkways that connect neighborhoods and destinations. 4:30 pm Call meeting to order I. Right lane is an exclusive right turn. § Kids well went well. Lots of visibility. Delegate Fleischauer stopped by. Good PR overall for the community and for the Ped Safety Board. § WVU Center for Science Learning, HSTA has an enthusiastic training with Matt Cross. § SGA meeting coming up. Reflective gear. § Amy Boggs sent a great saying: Be Safe, Be Seen, Be Sure! § Reflective gear for WVU: · WVU highly reflective Pendants that can be stuck to bags ets is probably way to go · Dan Shook identified a reflective spray. o Donnie Williams § Stansbury Hall demolition call to mind the needs to revisit ped flow bc there will be an attract, restaurants, mini rec center. Per Donnie Williams ped traffic is more import than vehicles be vehicles are already over capacity. Jesse Heady-Bring Open Streets to Morgantown Streets Alive - Partnership, collaboration Community engagement. How to entice people to participate?  § Started in Atlanta 2010. § What is open Streets · Close streets to vehicles and open to people (yoga, youth programs such as soccer), peds bikes, Lantern parade, night rides, such as Atlanta Moon Ride and Open Streets Pittsburgh. Help promote quality of life issues · Perhaps quarterly during warm weather. · This could be done downtown or in neighborhoods. Rotate through the neighborhoods. Will permit indiv neighborhoods to shine. · Each neighborhood is part of downtown and downtown is part of each neighborhood. · Best Management Practice handbook. How do you do that and what is involved. Donnie Williams is willing to make DOH personnel with expertise to help develop that handbook. o Each event needs a permit and a well specified traffic flow plan. · Need to give thought to possible terrorism. Contingencies, multiple barriers. BUT if we do not do it, the terrorists will have won. The large ball in front of Target serves to deter vehicles from intruding on the space. o This year there were 4000 people at kids day. Barbara Watkins wants to host events to promote downtown econ development § This Saturday will be a big car show downtown. § Kids day costs $5000 whi covered tables and chairs, advertising, cleanup,water for volunteers events such as face painter, brochure printing, backbacks costed $1500. § Arts Walk costs less § Chocolate Lovers is a fund raiser and costs less. GETTING STARTED Where to begin? Separate Organization to serve as the governing body MainStreet Morgantown can receive money and looking for more evens CDB Visitors Bureau has interest. Collaboration with Mainstreet Morgantown, Neighborhood Assn (South Park and Evansdale assn already close down street) Timeline for 2018. One possible event for fall. Hub event Poss link with an existing event, e.g. small business Saturday. Upcoming events need to have uniqueness. Themed events. Need to revitalize downtown and this is one way to do it.
