MTB 4/28/14 1 Morgantown Tree Board (MTB) Minutes, meeting of April 28, 2014 Present: MTB members Dan Brown, Dave Barnett, Jack Cumming, Secretary Jon Weems, and Chair Kara Hurst, and city employees Marchetta Maupin and Glen Kelly. The Chair called the meeting to order at 4:33 PM in City Council chambers, noted that a quorum was present, and reminded the Board that this would mostly be a “working meeting” in the field. D. Barnett moved, and D. Brown seconded, that minutes of the 3/24/14 meeting be approved as amended. The motion carried unanimously. Old Business 1. Garlow House Zelkovas. M. Maupin reported that the zelkovas have been removed. The wood, while pretty, was cut into small pieces (for ease of handling), and not given to any local woodworker. New Business 1. Glen Kelly. Recently hired Assistant City Manager Glen Kelly introduced himself to the Tree Board, and vice versa. There was a brief discussion of Morgantown’s urban forest and the role of the Tree Board. 2. Dorsey’s Knob Red Oak. K. Hurst, D. Brown, and J. Weems traveled to Dorsey’s Knob to decide on and mark the location for a red oak to be planted near the large play set there. The preferred location was staked. 3. Jack Roberts Park Pruning. D. Barnett, J. Cumming, and M. Maupin traveled to Jack Roberts Park to prune small trees there. K. Hurst, D. Brown, and J. Weems soon joined them. All the trees around the gravel play set yard were pruned, as were a few other small trees in the Park. Larger trees were evaluated, with some contract pruning and a few removals recommended. It was agreed that the May meeting would be held on the 19th rather than the 26th because the 26th is Memorial Day. The working meeting adjourned without a motion at 6:29 PM. __________________________________ Jon Weems
