Tree Board minutes 12/03/18 Morgantown Tree Board (MTB) Minutes, meeting of December 3, 2018 Public Safety building conference room, 4:30 PM 1. ATTENDANCE: MTB members Dan Brown, Jonathan Cumming, Donna Marie Foster, Secretary Jon Weems, and Chair Dave Barnett, City Council liaison Rachel Fetty, and Urban Landscape Director Marchetta Maupin. 2. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: D. Barnett noted that all minutes of earlier MTB meetings had previously been approved. 3. REPORT FROM M. MAUPIN: M. Maupin updated MTB on her urban forest activities, including reluctance of some potential City Forester candidates to apply because of the part-time nature of the position. 4. UNFINISHED BUSINESS: A. Arbor Day. There was a brief review of the successful Morgantown Arbor Day event. Four trees were planted in South Park and Suncrest neighborhoods. B. Hazel Ruby McQuain Amphitheater cherry trees. It was reported that changes have made to the plans. Some memorial cherry trees will still need to be removed. Possible continuity by means of vegetative reproduction of memorial trees was discussed. C. City Tree Ordinance. Members discussed adapting selected ideas from Atlanta’s tree ordinance and from D. M. Foster’s document, “Making Your Community Forest- Friendly.” 5. NEW BUSINESS: A. Tree Board membership. D. Barnett led a discussion of problems getting a quorum at MTB meetings because of schedule conflicts. It was noted that one member has moved away and is no longer an MTB member, and another member will have a different schedule soon, enabling him to attend more meetings. 4. OPEN DISCUSSION: A. Morgantown High School (MHS) volunteers. Several possibilities to utilize an unspecified number of MHS volunteers interested in a tree-related project were discussed. 7. NEXT MEETING: 4:30 PM January 14, 2019, City Council Chambers, pending availability. MTB members should note the unusual meeting date. 8. ADJOURN: J. Cumming moved, and J. Weems seconded, that the meeting be adjourned. Motion passed at 6:12.
