Notes Woodburn School Redevelopment Commission July 27, 2017 6:00 p.m. Crosley’s Banquet Center on Richwood Avenue in the Woodburn neighborhood 1. Call to order Emily, Ron, and Kerry in attendance. Since there was no quorum at this meeting, no official actions were taken. 2. Review/approval of minutes from last meeting Since there was no quorum, we will review/ approve minutes from the last two meetings at the August meeting. 3. Introductions: Ron Dulaney, City Council member 5th Ward new Council rep on WSRC Welcome, Ron, longtime resident of the Woodburn neighborhood and supporter of the School! 4. Thank you: Marti Shamberger, past City Council member 5th Ward 5. Assignment of minutes taker for this meeting and review of Google docs folder for WSRC related documents 6. Items for discussion/consideration: a. Building assessment report from City Engineer, Damien Davis i. Mills Group has assessed the main school building—not sure if the modular and shell building were included in the assessment ii. Goal is to use the assessment to identify and prioritize maintenance and capital improvements and associated budgets We delegated this item to Chris as he has the most historical context to follow up. We also need to follow up with Kenny b. Branding/Marketing Plan: i. Emily and Chris met with Greg and Lindsay Estep of Little Fish Design in the spring re: the development of a branding campaign and associated materials for the Woodburn efforts. Greg and Lindsay have an approach they’d like to pitch  to us once they find a “new normal” following the recent birth of their baby girl. We are hoping for a presentation in August or September. c. Boys and Girls Club grant from Lowes: i. Denny Poluga, Director of the Boys and Girls Club, contacted Chris re: the application for a $50,000 grant from Lowes. The grant could cover capital projects and Denny thought some of the parapet wall and other water intrusion issues could be partially covered by some of the grant funds if awarded. The grant was successful and we need to coordinate with Denny on the timing and amount of funding that could be used, along with the in-kind support offered by March-Westin, to address the leakage. It would be best if we could get the parapet and other leakage addressed before winter. We discussed this in conjunction with the overall building assessment. Denny plans to follow up with Frank Devono about the playground but we would like to have a building assessment and plan from the City prior to presenting to the School Board. d. Wooden stair removal i. Our first attempt at removing/salvaging usable wood/discarding of non-usable wood was met with partial success due to the ordered dumpster not being delivered on the work day. WSRC member, Evan Fedorko, has agreed to coordinate a second work day to complete the removal. I believe he is shooting for a date around August 20-22 time frame. Also, congrats to Evan and his family on the addition of their new baby! Evan will lead the work day on August 20th. Ron and Kerry are able to help, as well. Emily will follow up with Evan about the timing for the iServe post. e. Parking lots, paving and grounds i. Parking lots and paving: I've not been to the school for a bit, but there was some paving supposed to be occurring on the upper lots. Marti...was the lower lot on Charles also in the mix? Ron will follow up about this. ii. Marti and Maryangel had expressed interest in creating a beautification plan for the rail fence area down on Charles. Something we could install in the fall? f. Meeting location i. Mark and Karen Furfari are selling the business of Marios and Crosley’s to some of their employees, but will maintain ownership of the physical structures that  house the businesses. I believe we will be able to continue using Crosley’s as our meeting spot, but am confirmation from the new owners. g. Report to Council i. The WSRC has not delivered an annual report to City Council for at least a year, though it has kept several members of council updated in other ways. I think it would be good to go before our new Council with a brief overview of the history of the project and the anticipated future of the property. Perhaps a September presentation? I am glad to deliver, but it would be good to have as many WSRC members in attendance as possible. The group discussed developing a presentation giving City Council members the historical background of Woodburn, including how it came to be owned by the City, the groups currently renting space in the building, and future plans for the building and grounds. Ideally, this would include the building assessment and planned maintenance efforts, as well as plans for the playground.
