Woodburn School Redevelopment Commission
Minutes of Thursday October 29, 2020
Members present: John Trumble, Marti Shamberger, Chris Haddox, Ron Dulaney, Ross
Justice, Marly Hazen Yniques.
The meeting was called to order by Chris Haddox at 6:04 p.m. via ZOOM. The minutes
were accepted as presented.
Chris Haddox and Ross Justice met with City Public Works Director Alex Stockdale, and
City Engineer Damian Davis, on Wednesday September 30 at the Woodburn site.
Discussion was held about the outside property issues including the area around the fire
escape removal, the loose flashing around the front parapet, and the water leaking inside of
this area in the Pop Shop room as well as interior issues addressing post construction clean
up. Other items discussed were developing storage areas in the gym area for the Boys and
Girls Club; future replacement of the roof/windows; and removal of the front portico.
Alternative uses for heating this winter are also being considered since the building is in
limited use. Commission members felt that the WRDC should be part of the conversation
with the City with any changes in use of the building.
John Trumble stated that there were not any updates on the Energy Bond. Further studies
were being done by WVU.
Discussion was held regarding using the front of the building area as a pollinator garden.
Members suggested information signage and participation from the Neighborhood Assn.
and community. Marly Hazen Yniques agreed to follow up on ideas on the pollinator
garden. Suggestions’ of a tutorial videos for promotion of the garden, seed shares and
“how to” plantings in the area would be considered for spring.
The annual payment $70k to the BOE for the property will be in 2021. The Commission
agreed to ask City Council that this amount remain in the budget for the building
maintenance. Chris Haddox asked Ross Justice to draft a letter from the commission
concerning this budget item.
The November 24th COW the commission will ask to be on the agenda and give an update
to Council on the Woodburn site.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:15 p.m.
Due to the Thanksgiving holiday there will not be a meeting in November 2020.
