Recycling and Sanitation Commission Minutes of the Monthly Meeting September 16, 2015 Commission Members and Others in Attendance: Pete Bowlus J A Burke (Guest and Representative of Mount Airy Messenger) Tobi Drabczyk Peggy Fleming Ken Humble Tom Neff (Co-Chairman) Jim Stargel (Co-Chairman) Councilman Scott Strong (Council Liaison) Kathie Trivelli Mike Dixon was not in attendance 1. Co Chairman Jim Stargel called the meeting to order and led all in the Pledge of Allegiance 2. July 2015 minutes were approved with motion by Tom Neff and seconded Ken Humble and carried. 3. Citizen's Comments None 4. Montgomery Avenue Alley Letters a. No one in attendance knew if the letters had been mailed to the residents b. Councilman Strong will contact Town Administrator to confirm if letters mailed c. If letters not mail, Commission noted to leave as is until hauler notes otherwise 5. NEI Presentation a. Co-Chair Stargel noted he is waiting for the representative to contact him for presentation dates 6. Expanding Role of Commission - Renewable Energy a . Co-Chair Stargel contacted Heather Smith and she would like to present her thoughts at the November meeting. b. Councilman Strong suggested the Mayor also be invited as the Mayor oversees the commissions and not the actual Town Council. c. A commission name change and mission statement change may be needed if the commission's scope is expanded. 7. Recycle America Visit a. Co-Chair Stargel has not been able to reach via telephone, so he sent an email requesting to set up a visit to the recycling facility. The Commission noted a Friday would work best. b. Jim Stargel requested all commission members email him any questions they would like answered during the visit. 8. Shred/Battery Collection a. The Town will be hosting a shred and battery collection event on Saturday, September 19 from 10 am to 12 pm. b. Commission members Jim Stargel, Pete Bowlus, Peggy Fleming and Mike Dixon will be in attendance. 9. Mobile App or Mobile Friendly Website a. No information. Hope to have some information from the town staff at the November meeting. 10. Attendance of Commission Meetings a. A brief discussion was held regarding the council liaison attendance at the commission meetings. b. Councilman Strong noted that he had missed some meetings due to his family and work schedule, but noted we should feel free to contact him via phone, text or email. He will gladly follow up on any action items that are noted for him. 11. Town Appreciation Picnic a. The picnic will be Thursday, Sept. 17 at 6 pm at Watkins Park 12. Councilman Strong noted the Town received noticed that Frederick County is offering a hazardous waste drop off on October 17, 2015. 13. Meeting adjourned by Jim Stargel @ 7:45! 14. Next Regular Meeting - Wednesday, November 18 @ 7 p.m. SUMMARY OF ACTION ITEMS: • Councilman Strong - check with Monika on letters for the Montgomery Ave. alley • Jim Stargel to invite Mayor Rockinberg and Heather Smith to the November meeting. • Jim Stargel to set up trip to visit Recycle America for a Friday • Mary Van Metre to check with Monika to see if the Town can get a Mobile App to host upcoming events and recycling, yard waste, and trash schedules • All Commission Members to submit questions for Recycle America to Co-Chair Stargel Peggy Fleming, Secretary
