Recycling and Sanitation Commission Minutes of the Monthly Meeting January 20, 2021 (Via Zoom) Commission Members and Others in Attendance: Kathy Balderson J A Burke (Representative of Mount Airy Messenger) Peggy Fleming Ken Humble Tom Neff Mary VanMetre (Town Staff) Pete Bowlus, Mike Dixon, and Jason Poirier were not in attendance. 1. Commission Chair Tom Neff called the meeting to order. 2. October 2020 minutes were approved with motion by the commission 3. Citizen's Comments An email received from a resident requesting yard waste pickup be changed from Saturday to either Sunday or Monday. J and J was not in attendance; tabled to the March meeting 4. J and J Comments/Concerns - Not in attendance 5. Commission elections a. Kathy Balderson made a motion for Peggy Fleming to continue as Secretary; Tom Neff seconded and motion carried. b. Ken Humble made a motion for Tom Neff to continue as Chair; Kathy Balderson seconded and motion carried. 6. Budget Review a. Mary VanMetre reviewed the budget with the commission. It was decided to request $7,000 for education and to continue with the Recycle Coach app. Mary will check cost for the Recycle Coach app. b. Discussion was held regarding placing recycling education ads in the Messenger. The commission had received pricing last year. Mary VanMetre will contact the Messenger for current year pricing. c. Last year commission discussed placing a full page ad per quarter 7. New Banner and Replacement Yard Signs a. Nothing ordered as of yet due to the pandemic 8. Shred/Battery Event in 2021 a. It was decided to hold the Shred/Battery Recycling this year. b. Mary VanMetre will contact All Shred and Mike Dixon for available dates 9. Green Fair a. No Update 10. Drug Take Back Day - April 24, 2021 a. Mary VanMetre will check with the police chief to see if this will happen this year. b. Ken Humble noted the Police Station is closed to the public so residents cannot drop off drugs. 12. Spring Bulk Pickup a. Mary VanMetre will check with J and J for April/May dates for bulk pickups. 12. Meeting adjourned by Chair Tom Neff. 13.
