CULTURE, ARTS & PRIDE COMMISSION Wednesday, June 12, 2019 12:00 noon Municipal Complex, Committee Meeting Room (3300) 100 Ann Edwards Lane Mount Pleasant, SC 29464 MINUTES Members Present:Bren Romano Monteiro, Chair; Rebecca Gosnell, Ann McGahey, Frank Sonntag, Kathryn Whitaker, Charles Williams Staff Present:Nicole Harvey Ms. Monteiro called the meeting to order at 12:04 p.m. 1. Approval of Minutes from the May 16, 2019 meeting Ms. McGahey made a motion to approve the May 16, 2019 minutes. Ms. Gosnell seconded the motion. All were in favor. 2. Public Comments Ms. Gosnell asked the visitors to introduce themselves. Ms. Peggy Gale said she was head of the East Cooper Republican Womens Group Legislative Committee. Mr. Larry Gale said he was with Larry Gale Photography and was a professional musician. Mr. John Wright said he was born and raised in Mount Pleasant. Mr. Dana Coleman said he was a local artist also born and raised in Mount Pleasant. He said he attended Wando and the University of South Carolina. 3. Report from Subcommittees a. Green Mount P Ms. Harvey shared photos of the Civic Pride nomination photos of Belle Hall, Brickyard Plantation, Dunes West, Home Depot, Long Point, and The Mustard Seed. There was discussion on the nominations of the neighborhoods and businesses, and it was decided that Mustard Seed was the choice. Ms. Whitaker made a motion to approve The Mustard Seed for the Civic Pride Award. Ms. Gosnell seconded the motion. All were in favor. b. Town Hall Art Ms. Monteiro said they intended for Town Hall Art to be every quarter. She said because of the work involved in getting the artwork in, removing the old artwork, and getting the new ones on the wall and the happy hour component for the artists they were thinking of doing it every four months. There was discussion of using some of the existing artists work and adding new artists and the time involved for each. It was decided since the Commission would not meet in July, they would vote on art in August and then install. c. Sculpture Ms. Harvey shared pictures of the installed sculptures at the Jones Center and the library. Ms. Gosnell thanked Ms. McGahey for her hard work involving the sculptures. Members discussed the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition (SEWE) reception that was held to highlight the bronze sculptures at Waterfront Park. d. Art on the Half Shell Ms. Harvey said she would be ordering five more after July 1. She said that Ms. Linda Page spoke to her about having one outside of the area by Sweetgrass Hardware where her shop is. She said that a business sponsorship would be $1,000. There was discussion about approaching more businesses. Ms. Monteiro said they need to include Councilwoman Whitley in this as she said she would speak with groups about the program. Mr. Williams arrived at 12:29 p.m. e. Traffic Box Art Ms. Harvey said they were waiting on the installers. She said that they have the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) encroachment permits and the sign company has the art. She said they know it must be completed by June 30. f. Paint the Town Ms. Gosnell said they had a great meeting in May with eight artists and one business owner. She said that the artists said they could get the work completed by the deadline. She said that Ms. Whitaker and Mr. Sonntag agreed to seek out some businesses to create more opportunities for the artists. They discussed the submissions received so far, reviewed them, and discussed the available locations. g. Its Raining Art Mr. Sonntag said they installed four silhouette images at the Jones Center and Park West. There was discussion of how long they would continue this project and possibly moving on to something else such as the Shadow Art that Ms. Gosnell had shared with them previously. h. Marketing Ms. McGahey said Instagram account has not been launched yet and they need to discuss how they could gain followers on it. i. Emerging Arts Ms. Monteiro said they had talked about using the Wando venue for next year for performances. She said they had added a subcommittee called Culture which Ms. Whitaker was chairing. She said they have been identifying ways to showcase the arts but not a lot with culture or pride. Mr. John Wright, 145 Rose Lane, said that by participating with the Sweetgrass Festival some of those participants may be able help and offer suggestions. 4. New Business Ms. Monteiro said the Commission will not meet in July but would reconvene in August. She asked if there was any information on a new member on the Commission. Ms. Harvey said the new member was approved the previous night at the Town Council Meeting. She said her name was Ms. Kelly Trager. She was an adjunct professor in Arts Management at the College of Charleston and visiting professor at Pratt Institute in New York. She has lived in Mount Pleasant for two years. There was discussion on the Commission members terms and the rotation schedule. There was discussion about the Fine Arts Festival by the Mount Pleasant Artist Guild and the need for further information. 5.
