CULTURE, ARTS & PRIDE COMMISSION Thursday, January 16, 2020 12:00 noon Municipal Complex, Committee Meeting Room (3300) 100 Ann Edwards Lane Mount Pleasant, SC 29464 MINUTES Members Present: Bren Romano Monteiro, Chair; Ann McGahey, Frank Sonntag, Kelly Trager, Charles Williams, Kathryn Whitaker Staff Present: Nicole Harvey Ms. Monteiro called the meeting to order at 12:08 p.m. 1. Approval of Minutes from the December 11, 2019 meeting Mr. Williams made a motion to approve the December 11, 2019 minutes. Ms. McGahey seconded the motion. All were in favor. 2. Public Comments None 3. Report from Subcommittees a. Town Hall Art Ms. Monteiro said the Mayor’s Music and Art Reception in December was very good. She said the event was very festive with the Cario Troubadour singers. Ms. Harvey said the dates for the upcoming Mayor’s Art Receptions would be April 17, August 20, and December 18 at 4:00 p.m. Ms. Trager asked when the application would go live for the next round.  Culture, Arts & Pride January 16, 2020 Page 2 of 5 Ms. Harvey said the application was online and it was an open submission process that states the deadline for each session was the Monday before the meeting date. She said the art they had was beautiful and they get a lot of good feedback on it. She said some of the art pieces have sold even though there was not a for sale sign on them. Ms. Trager suggested they use the traditional red dot to signify the art had sold. Ms. Monteiro said that Ms. Trager was taking over the Town Hall Art subcommittee. b. Sculpture Ms. McGahey said on February 7 they were going to visit the College of Charleston Art Department. Ms. Harvey said that anyone that wants to go can meet that day at 10:30 a.m. at Town Hall to ride downtown together. Ms. Harvey said she wanted to add a crab item to Sculpture since they no longer do the crabs. She said they had talked about when a crab needed repair, they would discontinue it. She said the crab on the island at Shem Creek was continuously vandalized and recently removed. She said that the crab at the entrance to Shem Creek Park, the one by Starbucks, and the one at the pocket park are visible and in good shape but there have been issues come up since the construction on Coleman Boulevard. She said that Mr. Phillip Hyman sent her a quote for $420 to repair and paint the three crabs. Ms. Monteiro said the oysters are becoming a new version of that. She said her concern was that every year they would have to keep putting money into the crabs. Commission members discussed cost, their favorite ones, the sponsorship of them by businesses, and liability of the crabs. c. Art on the Half Shell Ms. Harvey said they had ten new oyster sculptures. She said that the Hricik Law Firm was interested in sponsoring one. She said it was decided that was not a good idea and they should stick with the intent that if a business was going to sponsor one it would go at their business with no commercial content on it. Mr. Sonntag asked what the cost was for a corporation to sponsor an oyster. Ms. Harvey said it was $1,000 and the business sponsorship form was online. Ms. Harvey shared the pictures from the applications received. She said the submissions were from Mr. Douglas Balentine, Mr. Brad Carroll, Mr. Quinton Chaplin, Ms. Melanie Frank, Ms. Lauren Jane Gift, Ms. Vanessa Grebe, Ms. Johanna Hughes, Mr. Phillip Hyman, Ms. Zoe Hyman, Ms. Claudia Interrante, Ms. Charlyn Knight, Mr. Rick Sargent, Ms. Ethel Marie Sloan, Mr. Mickey Timms, Ms. Julie Wheat, Mr. Everett White, and Ms. Mimi Wood. Ms. Wood was present and shared the story and history behind her submission. The Commission members said that they really liked it and discussed placement of it. They discussed commercial content, business sponsorship of it, and the fact that one of the businesses in a building next to Town Hall wants the oyster with this scene at their property. The Commission discussed the different submissions. They discussed that any of them with skin exposure would need to have Risk Management Administration approval. They discussed letting the artists know they had a reaction to an area but liked it overall and see what they come back with. Mr. Williams left the meeting at 12:42 p.m. The Commission continued to review the submissions. They discussed several that need to be followed up on and made choices. Ms. Monteiro said the ones with questions they would hold until next month and discuss once they have information. Ms. Harvey noted that Mr. Chaplin, Ms. Grebe, Ms. Hughes, Mr. Sargent, Ms. Sloan, Ms. Wheat were chosen. She said with Mr. White they were going to work on potentially another direction, with Ms. Wood they would get confirmation of where they are going to put that one, and with Mr. Balentine they would get approval on whether they need to make some alterations to it. Mr. Sonntag made a motion to accept the six submissions that were chosen. Ms. Whitaker seconded the motion. All were in favor. d. Traffic Box Art Ms. Harvey said she had received the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) approval that morning and she forwarded that to the sign company. e. Paint the Town Ms. Harvey said Ms. Rogers took pictures on the work that was being done on the Farmers Market restrooms and would forward those to the Commission members. She said Mr. Quinton Chaplin’s work was done and ready to go to on the fire station. She said that Mr. Phillip Hyman picked up with Celadon for something there and was working on a concept and color scheme. Ms. Monteiro asked about something at an Ace Hardware. Ms. Harvey said Ms. Linda Page said they may be interested in sponsoring an oyster for Sweetgrass Hardware on Winnowing Way and Highway 17. She said she would follow up on that. f. It’s Raining Art Mr. Sonntag said they had talked about asking Ms. Kris Manning to do something. Ms. Harvey said she had not talked with her but would. g. Marketing Ms. Monteiro said they are moving along with the Facebook and Instagram pages. He asked Ms. Whitaker if she would go with him to meet with the Fine Arts Chair, Ms. Laurie Carroll. He said he wanted to find out if they are interested in creating a performance opportunity for students and if they could incorporate professional artists into that program. He also wanted to ask if they put their ensembles together. He said they need to figure out how to help achieve some of their objectives. i. Culture Ms. Whitaker said Davis & Floyd gave $20,000 the fund that was created to add to the concept for a cultural arts center at the Rifle Range Road Park. Ms. Whitaker said they had talked about a video of the sweetgrass basket makers and asked about the next steps. Ms. Harvey said she and Ms. Whitley would get together soon as the deadline for applications for Accommodation Tax Advisory Committee (ATAC) funds was coming up soon. 4. New Business Ms. Monteiro said there was an email about subcommittees, and they need to revisit it. She said each member could take a subcommittee to work hard on and it would eliminate the need for a lot of meetings. Ms. Harvey said Mr. Corey Austin was selected to the Commission. Ms. Monteiro said they will see where to incorporate him. She said Mr. Williams’ term expires in February. 5.
