MINUTES
Present: Brad Dunnells, Ann McGahey, Bren Romano Monteiro,
Corey Alston, Nicole Thomas, Courtney Sarre.
Absent: Kathryn Whitaker
Staff Present: Nicole Harvey, Danielle Fraser, Steve Gergick
Called to order 12:03
I. Approval of Minutes from the September 7, 2022, meeting
Ms. McGahey motions and Ms. Monteiro seconds. Passes
unanimously.
II. Public Comments
Ms. Keely Ann Wright introduces herself as the representative on
the Recreation Advisory Commission for the Culture, Arts, and Pride
Commission.
Mr. Gergick speaks about the Recreation Advisory Commission
III. Report from Subcommittees
i) Sweetgrass Basket Stand Project
Mr. Alston explains there were not enough volunteers to work
on the stands at their last attempt to come together. Mr. Alston is
currently trying to form a group to help renovate the stands and will
be speaking to the weavers to see what they can contribute in
terms of labor. Mr. Alston says there are 12 stands completed and
working on 6 or 7 this quarter.

Ms. Harvey encourages speaking to the schools to recruit
students needing volunteer hours now that the school year has
begun.
Mr. Alston reminds members that the next paint day is
November 5th. He will share that with the weavers at the next
meeting. Painting will take place from 9am-1pm and food will be
provided. Mr. Alston reaffirms they are working on 6 stands and
need roofing, primer, and colors.
Ms. Sarre mentions the construction department at Lucy
Beckham High School. Mr. Alston explains people are needed to
mount the roofing.
ii) Marketing
Ms. McGahey says there is not much of an update.
Ms. Harvey talks about the Children’s Day festival which is
next Sunday from noon-5pm. Ms. Harvey proposes time frames
for volunteers being 11am-2pm and 2pm-5pm. Ms. Fraser will
send an invite out to see who can help from the Commission.
Ms. Harvey asks whether the Commission would like to have
a float in the Christmas Parade. The parade is December 11,
beginning at 5:30pm. There is discussion regarding the theme
and what items should be included on the float.
iii) Student Art.
Ms. Harvey explains that the conversation has begun with the
High Schools regarding painting an oyster. The subcommittee will
meet before the next meeting. There is conversation as to whether
there should be a competition between schools. Discussion as to
offering a pizza party reward.
iv) Art on the Half Shell
Ms. Harvey briefly mentions the tie between student art and
Art on the Half Shell. Ms. Monteiro inquires about quantity of
shells in regard to the budget. Ms. Harvey will send out the
budget to the Commission members to review.

Mr. Alston suggests encouraging friendly competition
between the schools. Ms. Sarre suggests no competition so that
no one school is out funds for materials. Ms. Monteiro suggests
working with Towne Centre to feature them side by side where
people vote.
Ms. Harvey encourages letting the art teachers drive the
discussion on how the process will play out.
v) Town Hall Art
Ms. Harvey reminds the Commission members the mayor’s
reception has changed to Thursday, Dec 15th.
IV. New Business
Ms. Thomas and Ms. Whitaker are up for appointing. Ms.
Monteiro and Ms. McGahey terms will expire Feb 2023. Ms.
Harvey reminds members to recruit new potential members.
Ms. Harvey reviews the terms.
Ms. Sarre requests materials that can be distributed to the
High School to recruit volunteers.
